Well that would be the Jetsiest move to make, so you can guarantee that this is what will happen.

Kid's stock is taking an awful beating since last week and last night was terrible for him (which is crazy because you look at his stat line and its mvp-esque, but the throws just weren't there...) It sucks watching these kids' futures unfold for the worse right before your very eyes. Whether its Leaf, Leinart, Young, Johnny Football, etc., and now a Mariota...these are just kids who were (or they or others believed they were) Prime 1A their whole lives, and it comes crashing down at 21, 22, 23 years old. My daughter is getting ready to go to college, and it would be awful see to her dreams smashed to smithereens in just a few more years. What the hell are you talking about? I'd still take Mariota in a heartbeat if he falls to #6.

I realize its only one game, but...I saw enough confused, desperate and weak throws last night to realize we've already had our fill of that the last several years. I'd rather keep Geno, maybe draft a prospect in a later round, pick up a serviceable vet, and continue building out the rest of the team (line, WR, secondary). I think the chances of finding our long-term, championship-caliber QB in 2015 are slim to none.

I'd rather you take that dildo out of your ass and start using your sensibility. Not in the first round, bozo. New York bozo?

Wasn't Geno expected to go first overall or something crazy like that until the Senior Bowl (or something)?

I say we get the Eagles to mortgage their future to us if he falls to 6, and rebuild the team with some awesome picks.

Herbstreet, while tearing apart Mariota's performance last night on Mike and Mike this AM, offered a very interesting anecdote about Mariota. Apparently, Chip Kelly told Herbstreet that Mariota processes information and learns the fastest of any football player he had ever coached (and this was a recent statement, after Kelly had been in the NFL a couple of seasons). Herbstreet noted this while offering the positive that while Mariota doesn't have the under center footwork or super gun arm - he does read defenses, make adjustments at the line and look to his second and third options when he is in the pocket.
It got me thinking because as Jet fans we've made so much light in recent years of how important the mental part of the game is. Geno and Mark were both relatively gifted physically - particularly Geno is pretty fast and can make all the throws, but the questions have always been on his decision making. Kelly is a real thought leader in the area of mental development amongst his players - collaborating with tech companies to create games that give his players mental reps and allow them to practice outside of the physical - if HE is impressed by Mariota's intelligence and adaptability, I find that compelling.
The next couple of months will be fascinating for him - he is being hammered for last night, but he threw what 2 TDs, no picks, solid completion percentage for ~300 yards and his receivers dropped some crucial balls. He WAS inaccurate on a few occasions, but I have a bad feeling he is going to be a polarizing figure the next four months and will likely drop to us at 6 creating a huge question mark for the new GM.

Last night's game is why you can't put any stock in Mariota's numbers. In that offense, Mark Sanchez completed 64% of his passes and had an 88+ passer rating. It's almost impossible for a QB to put up BAD numbers in that system.

It's all about "what have you done for me lately", isn't it? What happens if we take him at 6 and he is exactly what we thought he was? A Mark/Geno-esque clone? We would all be pointing at what Mariota did on the big national championship stage and say "Shame on us, we saw it coming". I'd much rather him have a better game (and win the damn thing), and if we either made a deal to get him earlier or he fell in our lap for some reason at 6, feel like going into it we made the right decision. We have a LOUSY history of drafting, developing, trading for or signing quality, championship-caliber quarterbacks for many moons. Some will point to Chad...it just didn't work out. He was too fragile. We tried to royally fuck it up in 1983, but got pretty lucky with Kenny O for a few years. Beyond that?
If our new regime, after doing their homework, studying the tapes, doing their necessary due diligence, feel this guy is our guy, I'll support it. I'll question it like holy hell, but...what can you do other than hope like hell it works out?

Some of you guys are goofy.
I'm not letting one game (a game in which he didn't even play bad) totally sway me in the other direction on the kid.
I'd take him in a heartbeat if he falls to #6. I don't give a shit if he isn't a slam dunk prospect and I don't give a shit if he never becomes a truly elite player. If he becomes a Top 15 QB for the next 8-10 years, then I'll be more than happy.
But if you'd prefer to stare at someone like Geno, Matt Moore or Jason Campbell behind center for the foreseeable future...then by all means.

There is no "sure thing" at QB this year or most years. I am not one to say that we should take Mariota, but we do need to find a reliable starting QB somewhere. I'd rather take a flier on Cardale Jones (if he declares). I would be in favor of tanking the entire season for Cardale next year. He's like an athletic Roethlisberger. Unfortunately I think he's staying in school otherwise we could maybe pick him up with our 2nd rounder this year.

Unfortunately I think he's staying in school otherwise we could maybe pick him up with our 2nd rounder this year. I have to admit, C. Jones intrigues me. Did you see that 60 yard laser to the end zone that the receiver caught out-of-bounds (like 1/2 foot)? OMG, and I was rooting for the Ducks. What a throw. I will be honest, why should the kid stay in school? His stock will never be higher than it is now imo. Je just won the national championship and is coming off of 3 very impressive victories for his first three starts. Yes, he is raw in terms of experience. However, if he declares, if I am the Jets I trade down from the 6th and take a chance on him later in the first round. Let him come in and sit a year behind VaGeno. However, VaGeno knows that his job is in jeopardy and Jones is right there to take it when VaGeno slips up. I know many will disagree with me ontaking him in the first but until we get the QB position settled, we will not be an elite team.
