Maybe this explains why Nick Folk suffered a rare off night.
Folk
After missing two field goals in the New York Jets' 16-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins, the normally reliable placekicker informed the medical staff he was experiencing hip "discomfort," according to Rex Ryan. Specifically, it's a hip-flexor injury that has them concerned enough to formulate a contigency plan if he's not well enough to kick Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
On Tuesday, the Jets worked out free agent Andrew Furney. Does his name sound familiar? He was on the Jets' preseason roster and kicked the game winner, a 51-yarder, in the first preseason game. He was nicknamed "Furnace."
Ryan said he wasn't aware of Folk's injury until Tuesday. He's not sure when it happened. He said they will monitor Folk throughout the week.
In other injury news, there's a chance defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (turf toe) could return this week after missing the first game of his career. He's out of his walking boot.
"That’s a good sign," Ryan said. "Is it a good enough sign that he’ll play, I'm not sure about that."
Tight end Jace Amaro remains in the NFL's concussion protocol. Wide receiver Greg Salas suffered a significant hamstring injury on his 20-yard touchdown run; it could be a tear, according to Ryan. Either way, Salas could be done for the season.
The Jets worked out a total of seven players Tuesday, including punters Jacob Schum (on their preseason roster) and Kasey Redfern. At this point in the season, teams start formulating plans for signing players to "future" contracts, which starts as soon as the season ends.
