Percy Harvin won’t take pay cut to stay with Jets
Posted by Mike Florio on December 14, 2014, 8:13 AM EST
Receiver Percy Harvin has caused no problems for the Jets since arriving in October. Coming soon, Percy will be causing a potential dilemma for the franchise.
According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Harvin won’t take a pay cut to stay with the Jets in 2015, when his contract requires a base salary of $10.5 million. While Harvin likely wouldn’t get that much on the open market (and given that the Jets may offer him more on a reduced deal that anyone else would pay him), playing for another team likely would mean enjoying a better quarterback situation.
Keeping Harvin would have a cost to the Jets beyond the eight-figure salary. If he’s on the roster at the start of the league year, the sixth-round pick the Jets will be sending to the Seahawks for Harvin becomes a fourth-round selection. That term works to Harvin’s benefit as much as it does to Seattle’s, since it forces the Jets to make a decision sooner rather than later.
If the Jets choose to move on, a third trade of Harvin since 2013 becomes possible, but not likely. Perhaps the Jets could be willing to take peanuts for Percy if that means not having to cut him — and in turn to watch him walk to New England and power up the Patriots’ offense in a way that franchise hasn’t seen since Randy Moss was dumped back onto the Vikings for a disastrous three-week reunion in 2010.
If Harvin finds a home with the Patriots, if he performs to his potential, and if he causes no problems, it would be disastrous for the Jets. And possibly for every other NFL franchise.

Sayonara Percy. What a bad move that turned out to be. Waste of 7M$ Will Idzik even be here? That's Harvin's only chance of being a Jet next year

Can't blame him. If we cut him it will work out well for him. He will become a FA and sign for cheap with Denver to replace Sanders and Peyton will help him secure his next huge contract.
We should just pay him. Our team blows and we have plenty of cap room. What exactly are we saving this money for? 320 lb pass rushers?

I like Harvin, but this was a bad trade. Could have saved the money and put it toward going after DT in the offseason. Desperation move.

Nobody wants to state the obvious here? This is a Manshit article, steeped with anonymous sources. Florio only posts Manshit articles, and gleefully acts like they are legitimate news. It's fucking pathetic.

Also, almost every Florio article about the Jets and X Player ends with "If X Player ends up with the Patriots, it will be a disaster for Jets fans." It's so transparent. Florio has been shit on so much in his own personal life he loves to deflect that nervous inferiority onto the Jets.

Let him walk for 10.5 million you could get Cobb or Thomas. No team is giving Harvin 10.5 million. Especially with all the baggage he has.

He doesn't have to take a pay cut, just restructure.

He doesn't have to take a pay cut, just restructure. No way you restructure him He has no guaranteed money left on his contract. You leave it that way until after the 2015 season and then evaluate things. If he stays on the field next year and produces, then you restructure his deal in the offseason and throw in some guarantees. If he's constantly banged up or doesn't play up to standards, then you cut/trade him in the offseason with no dead money in the future.

Who believes for one second that Thomas would leave Denver as long as Peyton is around? He's even already said that he'd take a hometown discount to remain with the Broncos. If the Jets can't land Mariota in the draft, then I'm taking Cooper and pairing him up with Decker, Harvin, Kerley and Amaro.

Stage 1 in negotiating a contract with a team - let your agent spread the word that you won't accept a pay cut to stay with the team.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm quite certain that Percy has no guaranteed money owed to him by the Jets. If Idzik (or his successor) wants Harvin on the team then they can proceed with the current contract for another season or reduce his overall money but give him some guaranteed coin.
In the end, it will come down to where the Jets finish after the season and their draft position. If they win too many games to succeed in the "Suck for the Duck" or "Shame Us for Jameis" stakes, then perhaps the Jets cut Harvin, took Cooper in the first round and use the money elsewhere (a veteran DB for example?).

A pay cut isn't even an option. It's either keep his contract as it is or restructure to give him more gtd money & lower cap hit.
