The ou way I accept Rex's firing is if idzik goes too! There's some game theory and moderately tough decisions to make by Woody. IMO the easy part is firing Idzik. He's a penny pinching bean counter who wouldn't know the difference between a football and a footjob. Rex is slightly tougher because I still think he's gotten a bit of a raw deal with subpar QBs and then having to run his CB-dependent defensive scheme with zero CBs. And, I think Woody recognizes that Rex was a little bit undermined this year. So firing Rex is a slightly tougher decision for Woody I believe. But even for those of us in the small minority who still think Rex Ryan can be a great HC, I have to agree with what I'm guessing Casserly (and everyone else) is telling Woody and that is the Jets will have ZERO chance at filling a GM vacancy with a decent candidate if they don't let that new GM hire his own coach. So as VTN said, it's a forgone conclusion....I can't see the Jets firing Idzik and keeping Rex because it would totally torpedo any hope of getting a good GM candidate. Let's face it, even with the ability to choose a new Head Coach, having a Top 7 Draft Pick, and having some decent Cap Space for free agency I think the Jets are going to have to compete hard to get a truly great GM in here. AND, it's going to take a great GM to entice a HC candidate when there may be upwards of 7 vacancies at the HC position next week.

I still have mixed emptions about Rex being fired. On one hand I really liked the passion he brought to the Jets. I don't think it was phoney, he wanted to be here, and loves being the coach of the Jets. There isn't any doubt he is one of the best defensive minds in the game, but that gets him into trouble when he doesn't have the personnel to execute, like no defensive backs. However, with the bad personnel hand he has been dealt with no defensive backs, and a knuckleheads for quarterbacks he has managed to keep the Jets in games, only to lose by a few points. On the other hand, his decision making is still flawed, and he still makes coaching mistakes at inappropriate times. Also, after years at the helm, he still has a very undiciplined team, which makes stupid mistakes and cannot get off the field. I thinking he's a goner, but am suspect of who Woody will choose as his replacement.

Server may crash on Monday when Rex is retained. As DC, dream come true No way in fucking hell that happens. He would have to have no self-respect if he willingly accepted a demotion from Head Coach back to DC here. He's going into TV unless the Falcons/Bears gig seem too enticing to ignore.

I'm a Rex supporter but we need some change, a reboot on the team, so I'm not against letting him go. The best argument I've heard which I can't disagree with is that Rex has been the constant through 2 GMs, 2 QBs, and 3 OCs. Even though you could make a case that ALL of those guys are subpar (an incredible streak of ineptitude itself in not being able to improve the personnel in those positions over 5 years), at some point you have to say a refresh is needed. The ONLY thing I'll be critical of is if there's no upgrade at the HC position. Change for the sake of change isn't good. You can't simply say the team is better without Rex, because that is not true. It's not addition by subtraction here. We need someone who, in total, is a better HC than Rex Ryan. Rex had his faults....poor in-game management with regard to clock and penalties, little/no control or grasp of the offense, etc., but he also had his strengths. He is absolutely an elite defensive coach and his ability to come up with new and creative ways to befuddle some of the games best like SparklePony, Manning, etc. is remarkable, even the 7, 8 and 9th time he faces them he still surprises them. Rex is also a very good motivator and seems to get more out of guys than many other coaches would. Last year's team had 5 or 6 win talent and won 8 games, this year's group is underperforming but not by much. This again, is about a 5 win roster and it's performed like one for the most part. So again, we're going to cut loose one of the elite defensive coaches and master motivators in the head coaching ranks, so that we can alleviate ourselves of a guy who didn't pay much attention to the offense and wasn't a strong enough disciplinarian when it comes to clock, penalties, efficiency. We better find an upgrade. No surprise here, great post, as usual Jetstream. Well-said.
