I know we don't see eye to eye much, so I'm trying to keep this question civil. But why is that? Petty doesn't have as many desirable NFL traits as Hackenburg does. I don't want this to turn into me "defending " Hackenburg, because I highly doubt he's the answer, but I think lots of people over estimate Petty'a skill set and football IQ. Because I watched both Petty and Hackenberg play in college. Hackenberg is a statue with no accuracy and IMO you can't fix that. Some of the same reasons I never liked Connor Cook, they are two QB's who can barely complete a dump off pass. At least Petty was accurate and mobile. Edit: Didn't see the other posts in this thread before I responded. Basically everything Stokes said. Exactly--disliked Cook too. He was the second QB I didn't want behind Hack. The guy was woefully inaccurate and he had the benefit of one of the best and biggest lines in the NCAA. And he is a class A douchebag. At least Hack seems to be a nice kid. _

Don't buy your Hackenberg jersey just yet. This what an NFL scout player analyst said about him: Although he has special arm talent, the tape shows flawed decision-making, poor pocket awareness and streaky accuracy due to unstable mechanics. There is no question that Hackenberg will benefit from NFL coaching, but the game still moves at light speed for him and hasn't shown signs of slowing down - is he already damaged goods?
Overall, the physical traits and arm strength are ideal for the NFL, but Hackenberg doesn't show a natural feel for the game and lacks a strong grasp in three critical areas of playing the position: touch, placement and decision-making.
--Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) (2/16/16) Perfect. If that's directed at me, I'm not. I've said so multiple times in this thread alone. All I'm saying is that Petty has just as many flaws in his game, so I don't get the absolute hate for one of them but the general support for the other. Doesn't make sense to me. I guess I'm favoring Petty b/c I saw more of him. Heck, both of 'em could be cannon fodder. We won't know until they're given an honest shot.

In college, I saw Petty as a one read QB. If his first read was open, he could make the throw and put it in the right spot. He struggled when he had to go through progressions and his accuracy suffered. I thought that aspect of his game improved in the preseason. While I thought Petty was highly inconsistent in August, I did like his deep ball accuracy. With Fitz, we are an offense that lacks the ability to make big plays. 3 times that I recall in the last two games we had opportunities for big plays deep when Robby Anderson got open down the field. All 3 times, Fitz missed him. They were the kind of throws that Petty connected on several times during the preseason. I am sure that if we put Petty in there, it will be ugly at times (but its been ugly with Fitz anyway), but I think he would have the ability to make some plays down the field and the defense would have to respect the deep ball which might open some things up in the running game as well. This has always been my biggest problem with Fitz. All good defences look at Fitz and think "shut the run game down and put the ball in his hands and let him beat us" they don't respect his arm and know we will resort to checking the ball down, screens and lobbing back shoulder throws up to Marshall. The lack of a deep threat to keep a defense honest makes us too predictable and easy to gameplan for, it's also the reason I think Gailey is gettin cute in certain situations. I believe that was OUR philosophy when he played for the Jills.

The one thing that I saw out of Petty this summer, that I have not seen out of Hack is pocket presence. He extended plays (failed to make the throw when he extended the play) and stood in the pocket and delivered some really nice deep balls in the face of the rush. In that area, I believe he is way ahead of Hack. In college and based on his play over the summer, I still think Hack lacks feel for the rush and makes poor decisions under pressure. Just my 2 cents, but that is the biggest difference that I saw in them over the summer. No argument there. That's by far something Petty has the clear leg up. Hack is skittish as can be. Hack was/is skittish because he was getting his ass shellacked at penn for a few years. I dont know if he is the answer or not either but I don't think throwing petty in will make things any better and Petty is not going to look any better than #FUCKFITZ if the receivers cant get open and cant hold on to the damn ball. If the secondary keeps getting burned like this then unfortunately we will continue to throw too much, put too much pressure on him and he will make mistakes and then we will start another thread about drafting a QB cause he looks like shyt. No QB on this team is going to look good when we are consistently 14 points behind and he has to throw 40 times a game just to have a shot at losing decently. Imo Petty looked better than the other 2 qb's ahead of him this summer but he also played against inferior talent. Would he have looked as good with the 1's against the other teams 1's? Maybe...or maybe he would have looked "skittish". In any event I'm not on board with throwing in the towel prior to game 6 for the whole season to "see what you got". I think this fan base is just like hack....after years of beatings, it has no confidence and it shows. Hell the same things were said last year during that slump we had...lol in fact its the same things that are said every year during our annual 3-5 game losing streak.

Read today he's not practicing but he's throwing in QB drills with the other QBs. He seems to be getting healthy, but I don't think he's going to get any reps in practice.
But if he does, watch out because reports are Geno didn't take one practice rep last week.
