Ugh. This story has actually created a firestorm over here. From what I've read, the mother was alone (no father present) and she had multiple kids with her. The kid was heard saying he was going into the moat, the mother told him no...became distracted by the other kids... and the kid took off. The rest you know.
All the arm chair animal experts are weighing in with some saying the Gorilla was helping the kid, and others saying the Gorilla was rough with the kid, and getting panicky because of the screams of the crowd. Personally, I think the Zoo did what they had to do given the circumstances. Parenting skills and Gorilla's demeanor aside...I guess we have to wonder why a child that size was able to scale the wall so quickly and easily?
