How old are you, and what's your general physical condition? Could this happen to anyone or are/were you in a high risk group? 53, 6'2" and weigh 195. My cholesterol is good and although my BP was high when I went in it went to a good reading the longer they monitored me. The bad thing is I smoke, that's a killer apparently. I'll be done with that shit by Sunday.

I'll be done with that shit by Sunday. So many of my family members and friends have become ill, or died prematurely, because of cigarettes. Growing up in the 60s/70s, everyone I knew smoked to excess. My uncle was a four packs a day guy. Wound up dead at 47. I despise them and count myself as lucky to have never picked up the habit. Why wait until Sunday? Throw the fuckin' things away now. Go get the patch, gum, whatever the frig else works for you. If you don't get the message after having a stroke at 53, you deserve what's coming down the pike. Sounds like you have an awesome family. How about sticking around to see your daughter graduate from med school and even as a practicing physician?

Ok here's the trip report PSA. Got back from walking the dog on Monday and at 10:57 I felt an explosion of numbness in my left shoulder and chest area and sat down immediately. I thought it might have been a heart attack immediately but after the initial explosion there was no pain so I figured stroke. My daughter wAs leaving to go back to Med School (sick brag!) and I didn't want to worry her so I hid in the bedroom until she left lol. She left and like another poster said I figured I'd wait a bit to see if the symptoms would subside. I also had to take a monster shit and knocked that out. Then I took a shower. You can laugh but I know from experience that once you're tied to that bed with all the wires and iv's you're shitting in that bed. When I got out of the shower my wife noticed my arm dangling uselessly at my side and said something. It was here I cracked like an egg and told her I was worried about a stroke. She donned her super spouse costume and called 911. When I got to the ER they did a quick evaluation and then I got the CAT scan. Then what appeared to be a wet behind the ears resident came and told me about the miracle stroke drug, TPA. It helps to reduce and sometimes eliminate all symptoms of the stroke. It helps 1 in 8 people. It causes brain bleeds in 1 in 16. So I asked the kid what percent have to have surgery to correct the brain bleed. That fucked him up because he didn't have an answer and he wandered off. The Neurologist showed up and I decided to go for the drug. The idea of a brain bleed scared the fuck out of me but I figured I'd take the chance to repair what damage had already been done. The condition of my arm and face from where it was initially to now is pretty big. My left arm has full mobility and my fingers do too, but they don't respond as fast as before and I have to "tell" my hand/fingers to grab things, otherwise they slip out. I'm dropping tons of shit when I don't remember to grab something hard, like my phone, coffee filter, dogs water bowl etc. Here's the PSA part. The TPA miracle stroke drug has a window of two hours from the onset of the stroke until they will no longer administer it. I fucked around for a little bit and was lucky the Neurologist was there to immediately diagnose/allow the drug to be administered. He was on call and just happened to be there for another stroke victim. If you got any questions fire away. Two hours was generous, typically door to needle time is about an hour. Since you offered up the PSA, I'm guessing you're realizing how silly it was to mull around like you did. The hospital I work in is a designated stroke center, so I see plenty of these. I've seen some go very, very badly, and some go really well. You seem to be in the top portion of that group, so I think you should go ahead and give the PT a chance and be ridiculously diligent with followup care/planning. Are they keeping you on any anticoagulants like clopidogrel or warfarin? This is just anecdotal but I was doing some reading while in the hospital. I was reading stories from stroke victims and their families and there doesn't seem to be any correlation between physical therapy and recovery. I'm not saying therapy doesn't do any good but more like there is no telling if your brain will recover enough to allow your body to recover. One of the Murses might chime in here with a better answer. Fuck what other people say, studies or anecdotes. It's YOUR health, so you need to try what YOU think may work. The brain is capable of creating new pathways, not only in stroke victims, but people with TBI and developmental delays as well. PT will certainly not hurt, so it's worth doing. JMO. They prescribed atorvastatin (Lipitor)40 mg daily and 81mg of aspirin daily. I have to schedule a follow up with the neurologist and I will ask about WarfArin, I had a clot in my leg about 6-7 years ago and was on it for like six months. yeah, I was an idiot with the delay but I didn't want to scare my daughter and I really had to take that shit. 😂 The difference from where my arm is initially until now is like night and day. It really was useless. Of course my wife called my daughter while I was on my way to the hospital and she turned around. I talked to her, told her I was fine and told her to go to school. They had 2 therapists evaluate me and said pretty much squeeze a ball or some socks and keep tapping my fingers off one another to work on dexterity and strength.

Glad the wonder drug is working for you. Any idea why you had the stroke? High blood pressure? Arterial plaque? P.S. Congrats on your med school daughter. You should be proud. They did a scan of the carotid(spelling?) arteries in my neck and they looked good. Did an echo on my chest and thaT looked ok too. The echo was creepy though. The tech was probably pushing 400lbs and couldn't reach over me comfortably so he sat on the edge of the bed and gave me a reach over while he glided his well lubed monitor all over my chest. Had me slide up on him like ass to hip. If he started breathing hard I think I woulda lost it. It really was massive. I had to flush three times to get it to go down. While showering I was thinking there is no way if I go to the hospital that I woulda been able to hold it. I mean that was top ten easy.

whats the prognosis for getting close to, or back to, where you were with your arm and face? Sorry to hear all this, hang in there. This is just anecdotal but I was doing some reading while in the hospital. I'm not saying therapy doesn't do any good but more like there is no telling if your brain will recover enough to allow your body to recover. One of the Murses might chime in here with a better answer. Glad to see you are doing better. Pt will certainly help maybe not has much as with a hip replacement but I gotta think it will help. Keep up the good work.

People visiting other patients holding their noses, pointing and/or laughing/grimmacing. Keeps me up at night. At his age? Most likely AIDS related. Dude, stop sending me dick pics. What can I tell you? I'm proud of "little Ragu".

If your cholesterol is fine, I don't get the statin script. That's all they said? I'd do more, personally. Treat the left side of your body, and your left arm in particular, like your right is in a cast. You'll thank me later. Very well and concisely written. No doubt your BP was through the roof prior to unloading. Maybe a trip to a gastro is in order?

I was telling my wife to leave me alone because I have do things to get better and she kept tying to help. I tell her Jetworks says to treat my right side like it's in a cast and she says OK, GFY.😂 Those low flow toilets suck. If it was a three piece it woulda went down no problem. I might have embellished a little because I don't fish. i thought that statin was for blood pressure and the nurse said my cholesterol was good. Good catch, I'll ask at my follow up with the neurologist.

I wouldn't say ok but I consider myself fortunate. I slur words occasionally and using my left hand is frustrating sometimes. Texting is a bitch trying to hit the keys and using a knife is a challenge. I was pretty tired this week too. If I concentrate when talking I don't slur the words though.
