Aaaaaaaand not surprisingly, I'm reading in the daily snews the FBI was contacted about this guy previously because of social media posts. Did they contact him? If so, did he buy this weapon before or after? Seems everyone knew this kid was a loon. The premiere law enforcement agency in the world. At this point I would rather have the local PDs handle all these types of cases. Even the terrorism. NYPD has proven it can be done.

The FBI seemed to know right away who all the 9/11 hi-jackers were...yet the attacks still were carried out...then they needed the NYPD to help them get around NYC because the Agents didnt know the lay of the land. Ray Kelly, whom I'm not a fan of, did one thing right when he duplicated the counter terrorism efforts within the NYPD structure against the wishes of the Feds. Kelly, a former Fed. Customs boss, knew better than anyone that the FBI was a bureaucratic nightmare filled with careerists and cubicle dwellers. We needed boots on the ground and ears to walls and we got that when we sent cops all over the world. When the London train bombing occurred, Ray Kelly knew before the President because of the NYPD London based Detective stationed there, who then rolled up his sleeves and worked hand and hand with his British counter parts during the investigation. The FBI doesnt work like that. And remember, people called Trump a kook when he said Trump Tower was bugged...and now we hear about the FISA warrants procured by the FBI at the behest of the Democratic Machine. IF it is true the FBI knew about this kid, heads should roll.

Bloat, and political hacks. The FBI has a wide net and can serve a purpose in gathering information. But after that they are almost useless. Pass the information along to local authorities and let them handle it. And for fucks sake give the local PDs the tools they need. If the GOP had any balls the current FBI wouldn't survive the mess it is in now. And if the Dems weren't hypocrites (they used to be the party of individual liberty) they would help them do it. It needs to be debloated and decentralized. Too many times were hear they knew about people and nothing was done.

As far as giving local PD tools, they look upon them with contempt and sharing info is not "a thing", hence Ray Kelly not relying on them and being proactive at the local level.

I am a gun carrying person. I carry everywhere I go. I do not own an AR. I see no reason why anyone outside the police or mil would need this much fire power to hunt or defend themselves. I think it should be banned to be honest. I also do not think a 18 YO kid should be able to legally buy one. I will defend the 2nd amendment with my life. But could easily support laws that limit the ease of access to some of this stuff. I think the biggest issue we have is mental health. I am in Healthcare and I see it everyday. The problem is there is no money to be made outside the Pharma solutions so no one invests in this. We have some seriously sick people walking around and because there can often be no outward hint of mental illness they just blend in until they pull something like this.
Thoughts and prayers fr those affected by this incident. May the dead RIP and the injured recovered fully.

Was in Mass yesterday for my Ashes...and suddenly realized I was sitting in the middle of the Cathedral unarmed. I broke into a cold sweat. My wife had gotten there before me and chosen the seats. Usually I would be in the back by an exit...and armed. Did not like that feeling.

i have an ar-15. i am not going to murder a bunch of sheep anytime soon i also have a v8 dodge ram 1500 that i could use to kill 50 people tomorrow if i was so inclined, if i decided to drive into the shithole city i take the train into every day it's not a gun issue. it's a fucking mental defect issue. hollywood and the video game industry and media and pharma dooshes have more to do with this shit than smith & wesson common since you brought up mental defect....apparently the shooter was a registered Democrat. I know - violence from a Democrat?! Shocking!

If so, did he buy this weapon before or after? Seems everyone knew this kid was a loon. Par for the course. This guy, like most of the other guys that have done this, everyone interviewed afterwards says he was "off", "had mental issues", etc. And like the Newtown shooter, not a goddamn person did or said anything before the tragedy. And in this case, the FBI was aware of his mental issues apparently. And granted, you cant lock someone up because of social media posts, but c'mon. The family acknowledged the dude's depressed, yet lets him keep an AR-15 style semi-automatic weapon in the home? Not to downplay the gun issues here, the root cause is the crazy. And we continue to do little or nothing as a country, state, city, town, neighborhood to address the root cause.

I'm not, not anymore. The 2nd is why nothing can really ever get done. It needs to go. We're not overthrowing the Government any time soon with a fe dipshit rednecks and their AR-15's. Some common sense would really go a long way, but no one wants to get anything done. Politicians want to just keep collecting money from the NRA and hope it somehow magically goes away. It's our precious 2nd amendment and america's obsession with guns. Anyone ever wonder why pretty much every single one of these school shootings happen in america? There's probably a reason for that. It's about as coincidental as the AR15 being involved in every one of these shootings. this country was built on guns and violence...and because of that my sister who lives alone in rural CT has every right to protect herself with a gun...that will NEVER change...now why this kid needed an AR-15 is another question...

Im a conservative and small l libertarian myself, and a supporter of the second amendment fully, but Im at the point where we need to move the line of what can and cant be owned, since we pretty much ignore the mental health issues. We already define certain weapons as not-for-civilian purchase, it might be time to define additional weapons as military only or allow them to be owned by registered businesses like gun clubs, for shooting purposes, but not for personal ownership.

I have absolutely no problem with your sister if she feels the need to protect herself with a handgun. Assuming she obtained it legally, of course.

And a thought - this guy was apparently expelled from two schools, Mayor saying he had been undergoing treatment, all the social media posts, potentially on the FBI radar - and he passed a background check within the last year. Seems like we need better reporting upwards to flag people?
Not to sound cold with this comment, but playing devils advocate, if you ban the weapon he used, he'd just buy another type of gun if he can pass these background checks. Slower fire, less capacity. Maybe the death toll is 5 instead of 17. But its still a tragedy for those involved until the death toll becomes 0.

Agreed. The 2nd amendment states we have the right to bear arms against the militia. No where does it say citizens need to carry or own assault rifles. I think it is nuts that any 18 year old can go in a buy one of these, even if deemed mentally stable. The NRA would be smart to get behind, or ahead of this and lead support for that type of legislation.
