Who is on your list? Woody has a track record of hiring only first time, rookie head coaches including Herm Edwards, Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan. Does he break from that mold and go with a retread? A Cowher, a John Gruden, a Mike Holmgren even??? One guy I'd like the Jets to look at is Todd Bowles, DC from Arizona. He's an up-and-comer in the league and will be a HC someday. " Who is on your list ?... " ~ ~ only one... ooops !.. even better ~ ~

There's nobody really that amazing available that I can see. I think the Jets waited a year too long, and missed some potential good HC opportunities. If I were Woody I would be more focused on the GM. The entire Jets scouting department looks like it needs to go. When I look at the Jets over the last few seasons, now knowing how it ends in 2014, I think you guys have some serious rot. Your entire machine (scouting, development, everything) needs a complete overhaul.
With that in mind, were I was Woody I would be focused on getting someone from college who can implement a complete revamping of your entire program, whether thats as a HC or GM. If GM, I'd be content for a few years, if I had to be, with a HC that can bring some stability and at least temporarily bridge the collapse of the Woody/Rex/Tanny/Idzik era and what I was hoping to have in 3 or 4 years.
Does Woody care or is he just a billionaire who likes to have rare and prestigious possessions (like a football team)?

He may be a clown but he sure as shit knows QB's and his teams are always well prepared and play a physical brand of football. He didn't build that team or instill the toughness. They've been progressively getting less tough the longer Singletary been gone. And I'm not even remotely impressed with Kappernick. When did the 49ers ever play with the same kind of intensity and dominance on defense under Singletary that they've played with under Harbaugh? That San Fran defense never finished better than 13th in the league during Singletary's tenure. They've never finished outside the Top 5 under Harbaugh. The Niners were a combined 18-22 under Singletary. They're a combined 43-15-1 under Harbaugh. Not to mention that Harbaugh totally resurrected Alex Smith's career and now has a former 2nd round pick in Kaepernick playing like a Top 15 QB. He's shown that he knows how to adapt to his personnel and is great at working with young QB's. I'd take him in a heartbeat. Don't care if he acts like a jackass.

But I don't think he really knows football the way some other owners know football a like Jerry Jones and thus, he has tried to outsource football operations (smart move admitting that he doesn't know enough to drive the football ship)....but he's outsourced it to the wrong people. If you look at Tannebaum and Idzik I really don't believe either is a true personnel guy, a guy who knows how to build a capable team with an identity. Most GMs come in with a strategy to build a certain type of team....they want to build a tough team that is based on fast defense, or a certain type of system for example (ex. Chip Kelley's up-tempo system), etc. The problem with the Jets is that their GM's strategy has been to build a low-cost, economical team and try to breed competition that will force the cream to rise to the top. That hasn't worked here for two reasons in my opinion: 1) There isn't enough actual cream (that's what she said?) in terms of talent and 2) Competition hasn't really been true, it's been sabotaged partially by Rex playing his favorites and partially by Idzik with a QB agenda. So to answer your last question directly - Woody is a business guy but I know he wants to win and the Jets aren't some shiny object for him, or a toy to play with. He's tried to mitigate his lack of football knowledge/experience by using "experts" who haven't really turned out to be experts for him. Rex was the identity of the Jets (rightly for wrongly) the past 5 years. It was Rex's personality that drove the team. Let's remember our recent history. After Mangini, Tannenbaum was on thin ice. Think back to 2008, Mangini was a Tannenbaum guy and Mike held onto his job while Mangini was shown the door. Enter Rex Ryan and 2 straight AFC Championship Games.....at that point, Tannenbaum was riding Rex's coattails, would get him any player he wanted, let Rex have too much personnel input, etc. They also neglected development of a rookie QB because they seemed to think any QB could win with Rex's defense. Rex had a halo around him after those first two seasons and the Jets went all-in for a SB which put them in Cap hell. Then Tannenbaum is shown the door after blowing up the Cap, advocating for Tebow, and suffering through a couple of bad offensive coordinators. Enter Korn Ferry who helps Woody hire Idzik.....and the pendulum swings completely the other way......bring in a large volume of cheap guys, manage the Cap, push competition at the QB spot (but not really). The Jets need a new identity, a leader at the GM position who can instill a program that will work from the ground up. Managing the Cap has to be the SECONDARY job of the GM, not the PRIMARY job. The PRIMARY job is to build a capable football team.....and then managing it within the Cap. But guys like Ted Thompson (GB) and Ozzie Newsome (Baltimore) don't just grow on trees. If the Jets are ready to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and reboot the franchise then they need a strong GM with an identity, a plan, and first-rate football knowledge. Final thought, even though I'm repeating myself - The primary job of the GM HAS TO BE talent acquisition and management, with the salary cap being a close second....but definitely second.

Woody's first hires as an owner (I believe) were Bradway and Edwards, both first timers at their new positions. Every hire since then at GM and HC has been someone filling that position for the first time. I can see Wody getting fed up with everything and deciding to go after an established name. Harbaugh makes sense on so many levels. Aside from what others have already mentioned in this thread as reasons why Harbaugh would be a good hire, Harbaugh is a big name. Woody LOVES big name hires and might be easily swayed to throw boatloads of money at Harbaugh. Additionally, Harbaugh seems like a huge egomaniac. The thought of winning in the worlds biggest stage (NYC) for a huge sum of $$$ while armed with some young talent and likely a top 4 pick will be attractive to anyone.

While I agree that Woody is an improvement over Hess, it is beyond ironic that his biggest flaw, IMHO is that he has a little too much of your namesake in him. He's certainly overly concerned with the perception of his team, and takes steps to address things with that in mind, instead of making it a purely football related decision, re: Favre and Tebow post NYG Super Bowls.

The Wall Street Journal today suggests Joe Moglia, the coach of Costal Carolina who used to be CEO at TD Ameritrade: online.wsj.com/articles/its-time-for-jets-to-look-outside-the-box-1416938760Personally, I think it would be hilarious if Woody hired this guy -- a former exec with no coaching experience in the NFL or even in a Division I-A school. That would be a huge fuck you to all of us morons. Then he would take our PSL money, sell the team, and make for the Cayman Islands.

I think the priority is Harbaugh. Bring him in, make Idzik or who ever he wants as GM report to him. Then give him the go ahead to do WHAT EVER he needs to go get a QB with REAL potential on this roster. Including trading anyone on the current roster and any and every pick in the next two drafts to get Mariota.
That said, I think Harbaugh is destined for Oakland. So I turn my attention to the following:
Dan Mullen - Miss ST. Part of the "New Hampshire Mafia" with Chip Kelly. The fact that Miss St has been competitive, let alone one of the best teams in the country since he got there, tells me everything I need to know.
If he isn't interested, then I interview these guys:
Quinn DC Sea Shanahan OC Cle Bowles DC AZ Toub ST KC Hue Jackson OC Cin Pep Hamilton OC Ind And Bevell OC Sea.
During the interview, the Defensive guys are going to have to outline their vision of an offense that will be able to compete in today's NFL. If they don't have specific coordinators or systems in mind, then pass.
Two sleepers that are probably to young for the HC job in NY are Carmichael and Clement.
