You dont sit a number 3 pick especially if he outplayed the competition worrying about him not be able to handle getting hit that could mentally stunt his growth is BS. If he cant handle it then he isnt a #3 pick. I feel the same about the Browns Hue Jackson is as dumb as Bowles let a #1 pick sit for a Jag QB. In the end you only learn by playing. Sitting holding a clip board isnt developing a QB. The jets arent winning a thing this year perfect time to develop a QB. Dont want to go through QB growing pains next year when the team is ready to run. Also delay starting him to game 2 to 6 does nothing he still starts behind the same crappy OL. If he is that fragile then MAC screwed up and should be fired.

I get the OL concerns metioned, but Darnold has shown so far that he isn't going to turn into a David Carr from too many sacks. Actually, his skillset seems to lend itself to playing with a less than ideal OL. Are injuries a concern? Of course, but that's the NFL. Start the kid now while the team is what we expect, not very good. In a way, that may make his growing pains less, err, painful.

Darnold needs to start and play now for all the reasons you mention. We are gonna suck no matter what. He needs to learn how to be an NFL Qb. He will not do it on the bench and if he sits this year he is still not an NFL Qb going into next year. Let him run for his life, dodge Dline men and learn how to operate in the NFL. Then in 19 when we have a few more parts to the puzzle the dude will be able to rock. Otherwise he pretty much stays a rookie until he plays next year. Destroying Darnold physically and mentally accomplishes what exactly? my thoughts exactly sir. Well said...

Why delay the inevitable mistakes Darnold is going to make? Start him now and get them out of the way.

Fuck that. He's shown he's ready and the stage isn't too big for him.

Regardless of who starts, you can bet the Jets will ultimately fuck it up.

Just hear me out on this before I get tarred and feathered... 1) the defense for me still has some things to clean up. Despite not giving up a touchdown they still commit a lot of penalties and the biggest problem this defense has always had - turnovers. This defense sucks when it comes to generating turnovers. This is a problem that goes all the way back to Rex. This defense was 25th overall last season meanwhile the defense is loaded with talent. There's a lot of new faces on this defense and not very good chemistry that I can tell. 2) The OL is a huge problem. Unless Mac manages to trade for a decent OL I have no problem predicting this OL is going to get one or more QB's hurt. There's still a good possibility that some of the starters won't even be healthy enough to start come opening day. 3) The ST's is horrid. This unit is terrible in regards to both talent and coaching. They give up big plays one right after another. There are no Leon Washington's or Brad Smith's waiting to be discovered on this ST. Why not wait on starting Darnold and go with veteran savvy and established leadership qualities in Ted Bridgewater? We all know he's the best QB on the roster right now. His accuracy is off the charts. By starting Bridgewater we not only can further build his brand in the event of a trade, but there are also a number of great advantages besides. The entire team can gel faster and build more chemistry under a proven leader like Ted. McCown, our QB coach, will have more time to prep Darnold for his eventual start. The defense can work on their problems with turnovers and penalties and become a better , more finished unit when Darnold starts. Maybe something, ANYTHING, can be done with the ST's? Right now they look like a fucking disaster and in time they can only get better. Doesn't it make the most sense to send Darnold out there when this team is playing at it's very best and most conducive to Darnold being successful and building his confidence? Start Darnold after about 4 to 6 games, maximize Bridgewaters trade value before the deadline and have this team playing at it's very best when Toilet makes the change? To me, that would be maximizing the Jets chances at succeeding and winning more than 5 games in 2018. Your thoughts?? Can't argue with your logic ... totally agree with you ... totally. I hope Bowles goes along with your thinking. On the other hand ... Maccagnan the Idiot ... will probably push to start Sam because he is a clueless idiot hoping to cover his terrible draft picks which has led to all your points of Jets' shortcomings, with the fans watching Sam and hoping for the future. Unfortunately, if they do go with Sam, with all the offensive and defensive and special team holes, Sam will be lucky to get out alive.

Darnold will start and meet/exceed expectations. I didn't want him, but from everything I've seen in camp and preseason, he has my complete confidence. There will certainly be bumps, but I think he'll learn from them quickly and change his play for r the better.

my thoughts exactly sir. Well said... Cant keep him safe from the boogeyman forever. The kid won the job. Honestly, I respect you but I think you're wrong here. Darnold did not win the job. He's being given the job. Bridgewater won the job as he showed better accuracy and great leadership skills maintaining stats as good as Darnold while working with lesser talent. Then I see how horribly the st is playing, I see the OL down two players right now and zero depth, I see the defense give penalty after penalty and I say to myself, this is not a situation that's conducive to a young QB learning and building. Then I say to myself the Jets owe Sam Darnold nothing except an opportunity to start when the time is right. I do not believe it's the right time to throw Sam is into a pressure cooker of an underperforming team that has to play 3 games in 10 days to start the season.
