So, while filling up at the gas station this evening, I noticed a line of about 25 people, waiting to buy losing Mega Millions tickets. There is an old saying. “Lotteries are for people that don’t understand statistics “. Here’s an idea. It will decrease payouts, but the greater good will be served. Each week designate a charity. Convince people to send 50% of their lottery spend to that charity. Make it non confrontational charities. Imagine how much could be raised for cancer research. Or the American Heart Association, etc. Just a thought.

There are cases where most money donated goes to “overhead”. Ie: someone’s pocket. However, there are legit charities out there. Rule for participation, only charities with 98% or more of donations going to the cause will be considered.

It’s only worth it if the cost outweigh the odds.
Say you have a 1 in 100 million chance of hitting the right numbers. Then at $1 a ticket, the jackpot would have to be over $100 million to be worth it.

Doesnt a cut of the overall lottery money already go to funding schools and the environment or some such?
