Chef Boyardee was a real guy. Ettore Boiardi. Died in the mid 80s. Founded Chef Boyardee, appeared in the commecials, and sold the company eventually for $6M.

As for the syrup, might as well rename it "Liquid Diabetes".
The whole name Aunt Jemima comes from a song sung in minstrel shows, often by a white dude in blackface and drag. Like 32 said, surprised its survived this long, and it going away doesnt really register on the "fucks given" scale.

Just for the sake of accuracy, they're not cancelling Nancy Green, or any of the other dozens of women who played the character. The character in print and marketing precedes Nancy Green being "cast" to portray the character. Ive seen too many Facebook posts today saying this change is an affront to Nancy Green, which is a bit offbase, I think. What i find interesting is that they went away from the "mammy" style logo that they appropriated from the deep south and minstrel shows a while back, and if you didnt know any better, the current woman on the bottle looks like a 50s/60s housewife. But I get it... the roots are in a pretty racist past. And Ralph Northram should be "cancelled" as well, no argument there. |

Honestly they can do whatever they want with their product. I am not a syrup guy and there are plenty of other brands. I just think it is a joke that they are going after something so innocuous which has already been modernized. People are way too sensitive and hypocritical and that is what bugs me. |

Thats pretty much my take as well. Its a good business move in today's climate, but they did modernize the logo a while back (maybe should have done the name change at that point also), and the current logo doesn't have the kerchief wearing mammy character anymore. Its all just High Fructose Corn Syrup garbage and shitty pancake mix anyway. It does crack me up all the worked up "well what about...?" responses to the change, which are mostly just really bad analogies and a whole lot of reaching. |
