From most of the post-draft reviews Ive read so far, Douglas knocked it out of the park. Four probable day one starters/impact players in the first 4 rounds, and a number of athletic defensive pieces for Saleh to play with on day 3. And a decent list of UDFAs so far - Kenny Yeboah the TE could stick, and the kicker, Naggar.
True to last years form, focusing on captains, character players, and what I like is a lot of these guys actually PRODUCED in college, rather than drafting workout warriors that dont get results.

There are more undrafted free agents (17) in the hall of fame than #1 picks (14). No one knows anything. I agree.. They should start the draft with the # 2 pick and put the # 1 pick in like the 4th rd.. that would solve that problem...

Point being... you would think.all this research would end up with identifying the players who will succeed in the NFL, and they don’t. It’s all a crap shot. Take a look at the 5 QBs taken in Round 1. Odds are 3 will be out of the league in 5 years. Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich, JP Losman, Jason Campbell, Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Josh Freeman, Tim Tebow, Jake Locker, Brandon Weeden, EJ Manuel, Johnny Manziel, Marcus Mariota, Paxton Lynch, Mitch Trubisky, Josh Rosen, Dwayne Haskins.

It doesn’t help the high first round picks that they’re most often going to bad teams that don’t build a support system around them. Not surprising that teams picking in the 10-15 range that had a little dip in their record wind up with good quarterbacks - KC, Baltimore, even Buffalo arguably, they drafted talented QBs but those guys came into good situations. That’s a big help. Don’t tell the draftniks but there’s only so much you can scout and predict - it’s still in essence a lottery ticket.

So 14 out of 75 #1s overall are in the HOF? About a 19% hit rate. Fun fact, from 1947 to 1958 the NFL overall #1 was awarded by lottery and not worst record. Chicago took Bob Fennimore, HB, with that first lottery #1 The NFL instituted the “Bonus Pick” in 1947. Paul Hornung explains in The Game before the Money: “First pick of the draft in those days was a bonus pick. Each team put their name in a hat, and you drew them out. Fourteen teams; here comes the bonus pick. After that the draft starts in predetermined order: 1, 2, 3, 4. Next year, the thirteen remaining teams were eligible for the bonus pick.”
