A shockwave ran through professional football on January 2, 1965 when the AFL's New York Jets signed Alabama quarterback Joe Namath to a $400,000 contract. It was the most money ever given to a college player, and more than ever legitimized the young league.

The AFL's future began to look even brighter in June, when the league's executive committee voted to admit two expansion franchises. In August the first of those two franchises was awarded to the city of Miami, whose Dolphins were slated to begin play in 1966.

The Houston Oilers moved into their new home, Rice Stadium, leaving behind Jeppesen Stadium after five seasons.

The Buffalo Bills repeated as league champions, shutting out the San Diego Chargers on the road, 23-0. To date, this is the last league championship in Bills history. The 1965 All-Star Game featured the '65 Bills against a team of all-stars from the league's other seven teams.
