I don't think you can draft a QB that high without him being the day 1 starter. And I don't think Mariota will play well enough early on to beat out Geno. Especially since his transition to an NFL offense will be just as rough as Geno's was. Mariota does nothing for me at all and Winston won't be there at 6. You're at least getting a veteran backup QB if you bring in McCown. If Winston and Mariota aren't there at 6, who are you bringing in via free agency to be Geno's backup or to compete for the job? Who is out there that is better than McCown? The answer is nobody. I most certainly think you can draft Mariota at 6 and let him sit as long as it takes for him to develop. For one, its done all the time. Bortles didnt start, Eli didnt start. This isnt the old days where top 10 QBs got monster contracts, sucked up huge cap space and had to start. I see nothing in Mariotas game that says he cant adapt to the pro game. There isnt a throw he cant make, he has a strong arm, quick release and is accurate. He's a student of the game, a gym rat, smart and driven. Not getting where all this means he wont adapt to the NFL. Hate the Geno reference, just because he struggled doesnt mean every QB who plays his college ball out of the shotgun or in a spread O cant change. McCown is a veteran who has proved over and over that he isnt a starting NFL QB. Outside of a handful of games last year in Chicago he is the prototypical back up/scrub QB. More importantly he's no better than Geno, whats the point of a 36 year old scrub? Id rather take a chance on a Mallet who might be an improvement over Geno. Hoyer is better than McCown, Fitzpatrick is better than McCown. I'd rather see McCoy as the backup than McCown. Theyre all better QBs. I agree with you and would gladly take either Winston or Mariota but it makes me wonder, why would he be avaialble at 6? Especially after the rumors today that some people in the Tampa front office are really hot for him.

I hope people realize just how relevant this is. There's a reason why guys like Heath Ledger, Blaine Gabbert and Kelly Stouffer were absolute busts. Never had a chance. Heath Ledger? LOL - Heath Shuler.
That's how forgettable he was as a QB.

Add in that their HC has a hatred of running QBs and Mariota should be there for us to take.

I'd take Jameis too, if either falls to us we have to take him.

Neither of those guys (not named Geno Smith) even made the Official VTN QBR list www.newyorkjetshampur.com/thread/1778/official-vtn-qbr-listI'd probably put McCown in the "overstayed their welcome" category, and Blake Bortles? I think needs a whole new category - "QB's with a name too stupid to be in the NFL". I will never understand how Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel got drafted ahead of Teddy Bridgewater. Never. Because a lot of front office guys and scouts are idiots. Minnesota have their QB for the next decade. Now they just need to build the team around him. It'll be interesting to see if they keep Peterson or make McKinnon their no. 1 back (or someone else) in the off-season.
