The Jets have added another linebacker to their roster with the signing today of free agent Joe Mays.
Mays (5'11", 244) is beginning his eighth NFL season and the Jets are his fifth team. Last season he had 17 tackles in eight games for Kansas City with three starts, all at RILB. He was on the field for 116 defensive plays and 86 special teams plays.
He entered the league as a sixth-round pick (200th overall) out of North Dakota State by Philadelphia and played his first two seasons with the Eagles. In 2010 he was traded to Denver for RB J.J. Arrington and played three seasons with the Broncos.
As a Bronco he made 21 starts. One of them was against the Jets in the Thursday night game in Denver in 2011. Another start came early in 2012 against Houston, when his hit on Matt Schaub dislodged Schaub's helmet, took off a piece of the quarterback's ear, and sent him to the sideline for one play. Mays was fined and suspended one game by the league for the hit.
Mays was released by Denver in July 2013, signed a week later with Houston and played the '13 season with the Texans. In the second game that year, he tackled Chris Johnson, then with Tennessee, for a safety.
