April 18, 1998. NFL Draft Day. On the day that saw Peyton Manning go to the Colts, the NYJ had 12 draft picks. We gave up our #1 & #3 to the Patriots when we signed Curtis Martin as a RFA. We acquired a lot of extra picks through trades of several players, including Hugh Douglas, Adrian Murrell & Lorenzo Neal and then traded back several times during the draft to acquire extra picks.
Rk Year Rnd Pick Player School
1 1998 2 56 Dorian Boose Washington St.
2 1998 3 67 Scott Frost Nebraska
3 1998 3 87 Kevin Williams Oklahoma St.
4 1998 4 111 Jason Fabini Cincinnati
5 1998 5 134 Casey Dailey Northwestern
6 1998 5 141 Doug Karczewski Virginia
7 1998 5 146 Blake Spence Oregon
8 1998 5 149 Eric Bateman BYU
9 1998 6 163 Eric Ogbogu Maryland
10 1998 6 174 Chris Brazzell Angelo State (TX)
11 1998 6 183 Dustin Johnson BYU
12 1998 7 195 Lawrence Hart Saginaw Valley St.
These 12 players went on to start a total of 147 games in their NFL careers -- 129 of those by Jason Fabini. A dreadful waste of 12 draft picks -- sound familiar to anyone?

On an upbeat note, on April 18th, 1923 Babe Ruth hit the first homer in the brand new Yankee Stadium!

parcells was never know as being such a great draft picker. it's the same old story albeit 18 years ago. the jets woes have always plagued with not making good (or developing) draft picks. imagine if guys like clemmens, gholston, hill, ducasse, etc all worked out. that's about 25% of the of today's team. about the only good thing is those guys would be commanding good sized contracts if they did work out.

Drafting well is so critical to building a team, having strength on teh bench to let guys go without having to replace them in free agency, like we did this offseason.
