for the future of ny jets geno should be unquestioned starter.
if he sucks, we get great first round pick next year if he sucks, we know sooner than later if he rocks, we have long term answer if he rocks, gailey looks like genius
fitz can do none of these things for us

I think this is just some subtle psychology by the new coaching staff. I have no doubt Geno will get the hook before the season starts if he doesn't start to "get it" AND Fitz is healthy enough to start the season. Psychology? Like bringing in Tebow and then giving Sanchez a contract extension so we didn't hurt his feelings??? Who is running this team, Rex and Tanny? Just wait, next thing you know we'll be using a 1st Round Draft Pick on a defensive lineman! lol Oh....wait...

Only a hot guy I'd like to blow would roll Fitz out there in week 1. Unless Geno faceplants in TC, i can GUARANTEE YOU, that the FO brass will start Geno... why? because the LAST thing they;re going to risk is having the Geno come off the bench and be the hero in december. It would muddy the entire 2016 offseason.
they're going to let Geno sink or swim in Sept, i can promise you that.

Others have said it, but this is nothing to get worked up about. Geno should get the 1st reps. Geno should had first crack at it.
Not every backup vet in the league phones in their prep like Vick did.

Lmao, of course. Here's to another year of the Geno "yards after the interception" Smith show, boys. Geno only had 13Ints last season. He just needs to increase his TDs to over 25.

Fitz is not long term, we need to see what Geno can do with decent protection and a full deck of weapons.

BUT, there was no reason to say today, in May, that there will be no competition at all, that Geno is the starter. I like Geno, I think he's going to get better for a variety of reasons -- 3rd year experience, new OC, better weapons, etc. I think he'll EARN the job.....but the Jets just told him he doesn't have to. There was no reason to say anything today, no reason to make news. Not sure why they did.

I know this isn't popular around here but the truth is when Geno had time, his decisions were good. Despite our wr's being suspect the last two years and our line imitating Swiss cheese (hello winters) Geno took most of the blame when it could be argued that a more even keeled view would be that the problems on offense last year wouldn't have been dramatically improved with a different QB. We had ISSUES.
Now..........
FLAME ON!!!

I partially agree....they didn't have to make any proclamations today but just the additions of 2 MORE QB's to the roster sends a clear message that he has to earn it. This new HC and GM don't give me the impression that Geno or anyone else is gonna feel like they don't have to earn their keep.

This team will never take the next step with Geno Smith at QB. imo never is too strong a word. heck doug williams didn't do so well at tampa and then went on to win a superbowl. dilfer was never even a good qb but won a superbowl with a really good performance. for the jets the best thing is for genot to win the job and start but the key word here is win the job. if he's anointed then i really can't see him doing that much better than the previous two seasons in spite of the upgrades at wr. here's to hoping.

Geno should get the first shot. He is the returning starter, he played well the last 4 games, plus Fitz is still rehabbing. Petty isn't ready yet and Simms, obviously, is the victim of a bizarre NFL conspiracy... Geno deserves his shot in the new O with the improved supporting cast. Time to step up, young man. i just don't like the whole idea of him being named before the season starts. granted he should be considered the starter since he's been the qb for two seasons but he should still have to win it.

Splitting reps in training camp battles has not worked in the past, this regime does not seem interested in the annual media camp battle. Let turkey neck run his 3 way "rep losing" QB battle in buffalo.

Maybe we should be grateful that he didn't get a 96 million dollar contract extension that he didn't earn yet

Let turkey neck run his 3 way "rep losing" QB battle in buffalo. Great point about the structure of the past QB battles here where the splitting of reps didn't help anyone. Fitz is a finished product and Petty is a year away from even competing so making Smith split the reps really helps no one. Actions speak louder than words and the FO getting 2 QBs should drown out anything said to the media in may.
