I too am intrigued by this lifestyle. I spend a lot of time watching YouTube videos and the like. I probably will never do it either, but I am really interested in self-sufficiency. I feel like all those things that are grandparents knew how to do have been lost, things like farming and canning vegetables and killing things to eat, raising animals things like that.
I know land in the desert out west is really cheap, 40 acres for like $8000! ...spelling, grammar, punctuation...

The US govt is actively scrambling and looking to make laws that would turn self-sufficiency into illegal and felonies. Fact.
They are FURIOUS about off-grid.

Thanks for this. I spent time Santa Fe before, I like the landscape but not quite the new age art scene there. I am not quite the deer hunter type but I do like to fish and am more comfortable in the countryside/oudoors. I am looking at the El Malpais area about three or four hours southwest of the Jemez mountains. It seems to get damned cold there at night in winter, colder than NYC where I currently live. What's Albuquerque like as a city ? I'm not familiar with the area you mentioned but you could live in southern NM in a town like Cloudcroft and have tons of snow and never see the 90's in temperature during the summer. In NM you are dealing with altitude and the mountainous areas tend too be quite beautiful. I used to fish up at Fenton Lake which is at 8,000 above sea level and limit out on trout in two hours....every time, one hour from albuquerque and a great drive. As far as Albuquerque, it is very diverse. There is a great mix of cultures and the people tend to be friendly and more of the "live and let live" variety. Comparatively speaking I get warned here in FL for taking out my trash can an hour early. Personally I can't wait to get back there. If you want to live off the grid but be close to a major city you should look into the east mountains. You won't pay $2k for an acre but at least you'll have a water supply. Check out Tijeras and the surrounding area. Thanks for this, a great starting point. live and let live sounds like my kind of place. Yes, I'm expecting to pay more than 2K per acre, I would prefer not to have to trailer my water in every few weeks.

I can't live without the internet now, so there's now way I could do it. I would prefer to have access to the grid but mainly use off grid power. In truth I need some form of internet. People do live in some fairly remote areas and manage to get some form of internet.

That would not surprise me ... in the end it is all about the worlds governments chasing taxes. Different but somehow equally outrageous the Japanese are planning to introduce an exit tax. If you want to leave the country with a significant amount of wealth ($800K+), you will pay a tax.

With the Jets season well and truly flushed down the shitter, I have been inspired by an magazine article on escaping ... www.forbes.com/sites/teradata/2014/12/04/living-off-grid-no-longer-just-for-the-hippies/Has anyone ever tried (or know someone who has) tried living off grid or living somewhere very isolated but on the grid ? Selling surplus electricity back to a utility company. I am thinking about New Mexico about 130 miles west of Albuquerque .. and yes thinking is all I may all I do about. I am thinking NM rather than southern Cali as property is obviously cheaper and heating is primarily an issue at night. Up north less sun for solar and more energy spent heating in winter and reducing humidity in summer. I am not so interested in Santa Fe, too many New Age'ers. Any of you MoFo's lived in NM ? I would imagine it's a lot of rural poverty with meth labs and hot springs. All stories, input of getting the f*uck out of your current life and escaping .. welcome. I lived off the grid in the everglades, while avoiding prosecution and being out of sight out of mind. No electricity or plumbing. Toothless rednecks, to this day i shiver when it crosses my mind before sleep or some other time and no sorry no deliverance i was not raped.

I expect to see a chapter on alligator wrestling in your memoir along with stories of contemplating your good looking first cousins sitting around bored in the shack. Maybe a meth lab appearance in the story somewhere.

Wait a minute; I thought I heard Homer say that? Did they *riff* that twice? hmmmmmm Yeah, they subtly and not-so-subtly rip themselves off. Homer first made his New Mexico discovery on a Krusty Burger Map and before Mr. Burns.
