Why don't we just turn the middle east into a giant pane of glass and then soak up all of their sweet, bubblin' crude? Why dont we just pump our own and tell everyone to go fuck themselves. Sell to other countries and use some of the profits to invest in alternative fuel research. We were/are but the price is prohibitive for shale oil currently. Until a few months ago (not sure how it is now) we were exporting more than we were importing. I think the break even point is somewhere above $50/barrel for shale. As for our pumpable oil there are political and trumped up environmental reasons we let other countries destroy their landscapes before we go for ours. Oil exports for 2004 - 2014. This is a good interactive graph that shows the impact of shale oil on the oil industry. As of 2014 the US was out exporting Saudia Arabia and was the #1 oil exporter. The reason we don't just hold on to it ourselves has to do with the global economy and the strange way pricing works on a global scale. It is a very dynamic and complex system that very few people bother to learn about. money.cnn.com/interactive/news/economy/worlds-biggest-oil-producers/

And to add to my previous post and jump slightly off topic that is the problem with all the ocupy/Bernie Sanders types. They think economics is Monopoly and the bank is bottomless. None of their ideas can survive without soviet style policies

Its something that Obama likes to take credit for although the process for that oil production started long before he took office. Didnt know we were actually exporting more than importing. But I am happy to hear it. Although I think other countries are probably able to produce a barrel at a cheaper rate than we are and that is probably the reason why these companies are going belly up. They need to trim the fat.

However Washington has lifted some export bans that helped open up the market. www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-approves-limited-crude-oil-trade-to-mexico-1439570613
