February 1, 1972
February 1. Draft Day 1972. The Jets had two first round picks in the 72 draft -- their own pick, #9 overall and the Redskins #20 overall pick. The Jets were awarded the Redskins 1st rounder as compensation for the Skins signing of former Jet DE Verlon Biggs.
The Jets had one hit and one miss with their first rounders: The hit came with the 9 pick, TE Jerome Barkum out of Jackson State. Never a star, Barkum was a solid player at both TE & WR for the Jets over the next 12 years, catching over 320 passes as a Jet and scoring 40 TDs for the team.
The other first rounder was a linebacker out of Michigan, Michael Taylor. Taylor only lasted two seasons in the NFL, both with the Jets. He made 8 starts in his NFL career.
After Barkum, the Jets got very little from the Class of 1972. The only other player to play regularly was Ed Galigher, a 4th rounder out of UCLA. He started on the Jets defensive line for several seasons in the mid-1970s.
The only other player out of that class that I remember is Hank Bjorklund, the running back out of Princeton. I only remember him because I got his autograph as a kid watching practice at Hofstra one summer.
Here it is, the NY Jets class of 1972:
While the Jets draft class was poor, the 1972 NFL Draft was not a particularly good one for most teams in the league. The only HOFer to come out of that draft was Franco Harris who went 13 overall to Pittsburgh. Other impact players include Harris’ teammate at Penn State, Lydell Mitchell who went to the Colts in the 2nd round and Lawrence McCutcheon who went in the 3rd to the Rams. Cliff Branch (4th round) and Ahmad Rashad (4 overall) were the top 2 WRs from that draft.
As for the QB position, the ‘72 draft may have been the worst QB draft ever. The only QB in that class to start as many as 20 games in the NFL was a 13th rounder who went to Cleveland, Brian Sipe. The only other QBs from that class to start at least one NFL game were Heiisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan (4 starts for Atlanta), Joe Gilliam (7 starts for Pitt), John Reaves (17 for several teams), Jerry Tagge (12 for GB) and Neil Graff (2 for NE).
