February 8, 1988Joe Klecko came back from major reconstructive knee surgery on both knees to play the final 7 games of the 1987 season, his 11th for the New York Jets. At the conclusion of the seson, he failed his postseason examination. Team orthopedist Dr James Nicholas recommended that he retire. "We spoke several times to Joe about joining our organziation as a defensive line coach," Jets coach Joe Walton said, "but Joe feels he still wants to continue to try to play. But in all conscience, we can't disregard the facts presented to us...Joe will always be remembered as a great player and leader for the Jets. He was a dominating lineman. It is a shame that medically he couldn't continue." Klecko wound up signing a contract with the Colts and played one more season, before retiring from the NFL at the end of the 1988 season. klecko needs to be in the hof. he was all pro at 3 positions and was the really important guy in the sack exchange. it's too bad he was cut but it was also for his health.
