Feb 19, 1991After being told by Jets GM Dick Steinberg and Coach Bruce Coslet that he no longer figured in their plans for the 1991 season, Marty Lyons, hte last remaining member of the NY Sack Exchange, announced his retirement on 2/19/91. Lyons had missed all of the 1990 season with a torn bicep and had worked hard to rehab the injury in the hopes of a comeback, but it was not to be. "I wanted to play and I worked hard it it the last 6 months," Lyons said. "But still wanting to play and still being able to play are different things." "I came here in 1979 as a Jet and I leave as a Jet," Lyons commented at his news conference. "There's been a lot of wins and losses in those 12 years, but what I'll remember always are the friends I have made. I will always be damn proud to say I was a New York Jet." Feb 19, 1998Coming off of a season in which the Jets ranked 25th in the league in rushing, coach Bill Parcells made it a priority to upgrade the running game in the offseason. In their first major move of the offseason, Parcells and the Jets signed free agent C Kevin Mawae, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks. Mawae received a 5 year $17 million contract, making him hte highest paid Center in the league at the time. Parcells said in a statement: ''We feel Kevin is the best center available to us in both the free-agent category and in the upcoming college draft. The addition of Mawae and Mike Gisler solidifies that position for us.'' The Jets continued their offseason overhaul of the running game with the addition of Curtis Martin who signed as a restricted free agent about a month later. Mawae would go on to play 8 seasons for the Jets, making 6 straight Pro Bowls (1999 - 2004) and twice being named All Pro. Kevin Mawae and Marty Lyons. Proof that not every This Day entry is a kick in the nuts to Jet fans
