Sorry about the length of this, but here goes....
I went to see a good friend in the Hospital yesterday afternoon. We called him RD. At 49 years old, he had a rather difficult life.
parents divorced early, Dad went with another Women and he was the difficult 13 year old that was suddenly in the way. Not revered
like most first born Sons...As many of you know, I lost my Son 3 years ago on the 20th. So RD did a few minor thefts, and was sent to Juvie
for 2 years. cast out. When he got out, he had a small apartment over a small business that was owned by his Grand dad, and the party was on...
all nighters, no adults, everything fun imaginable at age 16-18. Always a gas. After I bought a Bakery in 1985 he started to work with me there. I would
pick him up at 1am and off we would go to work... had alot of laughs, worked hard, made $$$. but RD loved his alcohol. Beer, Vodka, Gin, you name it.
Most of the time it didn't effect his work, so no big deal. We worked together for 5 years, with me as his transportation. After I left the bakery, he stayed an eventually
got fired for being ripped at work. Then off to Denver for 11 years, when we only kept in contact a bit. Then RD ended up back in Buffalo, ( he actually was the
first to call me ''Bing'', as I would give him sandwiches at school) and he landed a job as a Bike salesmen, over the phone. He was very good at his job, knowledgeable
about bikes, which he loved, but once again his drinking cost him a good job. Rd broke his leg stumbling home hammered 6 years ago, and the leg never healed.
He spent most of the last 6 years of his life starting the day with beer, and ending that way. He was never mean, and in fact the only person he ever treated poorly was
himself. When I went to see him, he was in total distress, and suffering. shaking like he was being shocked without end. He finally got comfortable, and we spoke.
I knew he was in pain, the previous Sundays for the last 4 years id visit him. We would play Risk, burn, and talk about the past. RD never spoke about the future.
He didn't know he had liver failure, internal bleeding and a bone infection. I said to him... I ll see you tomorrow. He asked me when... what time. I replied... around noon RD. love you man. .
3 hours later one of my best friends was gone. I'm sure he is right now smoking from the Horn of Plenty. I'm going to miss you RD. Say hello to my Boy for me. ...
