BRIDGEPORT — A Central High School teacher has been removed from her job amid charges she sexually assaulted a special education student.
Laura Ramos, 31, of Pond Point Avenue, Milford, was charged Tuesday with second-degree sexual assault after police said she admitted having sexual intercourse with an 18-year-old student a number of times.
Police said Ramos, who is married and the mother of a young child, surrendered Tuesday morning after being told there was a warrant for her arrest. She was released after posting $50,000 bond pending arraignment in state Superior Court in Bridgeport on June 28.
If convicted of the charge, Ramos, a special education teacher, could face up to 10 years in prison.
“She is cloaked in the presumption of innocence, and we look forward to obtaining all the investigative reports so that we can offer the appropriate defense,” said Ramos’ lawyer, Edward Gavin.
Ramos has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. Bridgeport Schools Superintendent Aresta Johnson said that action was taken June 9.
“ Human resources have dealt with it,” said Johnson. The alleged incidents were a personnel matter for the school district, she said, declining to elaborate further.
Police said on June 9 officers were called to Central High School for a complaint of a sex assault. Principal Eric Graf told officers, they said, a teacher reported one of his students told him Ramos had been having sex with one of her students from the special education program.
Police said the student witness told them Ramos had been texting him for some time, often relating her personal problems and complained “her guy” didn’t want to have sex with her anymore.
The student witness said he believed the “her guy,” Ramos was referring to was another male students who he often saw with the teacher, “making eyes at each other, like flirting,” police said.
Detective Walberto Cotto Jr. confronted Ramos with the allegations on June 12, and while Ramos admitted she had a close relationship with the victim, she denied having a sexual relationship with him, police said.
However, in a second recorded interview with Cotto, police said, Ramos admitted having a relationship with the victim from Dec. 23, 2016, until this April. She said most of the time they had sex in her car, police said.
