The Jets outscored their opponents 106 to 98 in their final 5 games, going 2-3. An overtime loss to Minnesota, a 3-point loss to Miami, and a 1-point loss to the Fagtriots show that the Jets were in every game down the homestretch. I think the team was finally starting to play better once Harvin arrived in midseason and Decker strung together consecutive healthy games. Every one of those 5 December games was winnable and it could be argued that a couple of Nick Folk makes instead of misses on FGs have the Jets at 4-1 over their last 5 games of the season. Are the Jets as far away from being good as most people think? The two Buffalo games and the Chargers games were the only ones where the Jets never really had a chance. Every other game was winnable and ultimately sabotaged by self-inflicted wounds like turnovers or missed FGs. Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and everyone can make excuses but it's hard for me to imagine that if the Jets had capable CBs all year (not missing CB1 - Milliner, CB2 - Patteron, CB4 - McDougal), decent QB play (in games like GB, Chicago, Miami the first time) and healthy WRs for most of the season they wouldn't have turned at least 4 losses into wins for an 8-8 record. Meh! I don't know. I'm just trying to form an opinion about whether the Jets need to turnover their roster 20%, 40%....60% in order to be playoff contenders. There were a lot of missed opportunities in these games.... ![](http://i60.tinypic.com/vqgxvb.png)

I am worried that the Jets are going to blow a good opportunity in a high draft pick, tons of cap space and a decent schedule into another lost season in order to get away from a coach for will have at least a couple teams considering him for their HC for 2015. You can't keep changing coaches and expect to win. I think the Jets blew it with Pete Carroll, they had a decent young coach and decided they needed a change. How many times are we going to change for the sake of change? Rex is far from perfect but he is also far from horrible and I think if he has the players he can make things happen. The Jets had a horrible schedule to start the season. Probably the worst in the NFL, lost ALL of their CBs, did nothing to replace them and Geno was WAY to inconsistent. Not to mention Decker was banged up and there was no one behind him that could step up and carry the O.
Fill the holes in FA and have a strong draft for a change and this is a playoff team next year with decent coaching.

If Idzik signs Revis we aren't even having this fucking conversation and NE doesn't have a first round bye.

GOD DAMN IDZIK THIS FUCKING SNAKE. He fucked us all! The NFL has four teams getting playoff Byes (Seattle, Green Bay, New England, Denver). We played 4 games against those teams (25% of our schedule against the Top 4 teams in the NFL) and had a chance to win every single one of them. Should have beat GB, could have won either or both Pats** games. We beat a playoff team (Pittsburgh - AFC #3 seed) and lost by 7 to another (Detroit). I'm having a hard time agreeing with those saying that Rex Ryan isn't a capable coach. Is he Top 10? No. Is he Bottom 10? No way. I'm actually starting to get a little pissed that we're going to get rid of one of the few things that's given us a chance to win against great teams over the past few years. This is a very Jet-like approach. Tom B. sees Rex Ryan in his nightmares. Belich!ck is going to throw a fucking party when Rex is gone from the division.

We seen what he can do with a good roster... But the fuckin mistakes he STILL makes... Don't know what to think, but if this team had Revis and the other Landry this shit ain't even happening I tell you that, and Idzik is being declared a genius. I just hope Casserly and these other people really know WTF they are doing.. and fuckin do it RIGHT for once dammit, WTF

I can't argue with the mistakes Rex continues to make. You'd hope they'd be corrected by now but they're still being made. That's the one thing that gives me major pause and why I understand the point of view on firing him.
But my key point is still that it only makes sense to fire him if you can get an upgrade. I'm not sure the Jets can do that. It makes zero sense to me to get rid of Rex simply to bring about change if you're going to hire someone who is subpar or is a big risk to crash and burn.
There's a history of some guys taking a while to learn the ins and outs of HC'ing. There's a lot involved. Belich!ck was fired from his first gig and his second only worked out when he stepped in dogshit and drafted one of the Top 5 QBs in NFL history. Pete Carroll seems to have benefited from several years of experience as well. I just get the sense that when Rex holds up that Lombardi trophy for another team he'll look back at the Jets job as a great training experience. We'll be the team that he took his lumps with and then fired him for not winning with Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith.

I agree with most everything you're saying. I think the problem at this point is that Rex and the Jets are perceived as a losing team/combination and he has had trouble attracting top coaching talent the last few years after the Superbowl runs of the first two years were over. Coaches like Callahan who intendded to come away with a ring. Who would hire Sparano unless they had no choice? I don't think it's an accident that Todd Haley is not the OC here. And MM seemed like a real 'get' at the time but now it's obvious why Iggles fans were happy to be rid of him

We'll be the team that he took his lumps with and then fired him for not winning with Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. There's no doubt a lot of us are torn about Rex and yesterday we saw a team playing hard (finally) and it does give you pause for thought but you cannot ignore the mistakes, the unpreparedness, the bone-headed ness that is an ever-present in Rex's teams. I love the guy and wish it could work out and for sure the guy can coach a defense and inspires not just loyalty but an almost awe-inspiring level of adoration from his players but the signs are always there if you look hard enough.Nobody is talking about it but yesterday was all on Geno because yet again the defense let us down in big spots where in the first 2 or 3 years that never happened. There were the usual collection of dumb timeouts burned, missed tackles, confusion and so on but for once the offense-and the QB at that-carried the team and made it happen despite the usual clusterfvck of errors You also cannot avoid the accusation that performances like yesterday all too often happen too late and increasingly in the last couple of years there's been an inevitability that when the big games come round we will conspire to lose. That run of murderous QB's at the beginning of the year was hard but to fail to tough out a single win in those 6 or so games said everything....we played and coached small when it mattered. I get what you're saying about guys learning their trade but what have you seen from Rex that you can point to-in 6 years, not a short period of time-that says he can Learn and improve?...I'm struggling to think of anything. for me there are two things that have become obvious with hindsight: 1)Rex inherited a damn good unit on all sides that was primed and ready to win that had been built by Mangini and tannenbaum and crucially it was a disciplined team after 3 years of Mangini 2)Pettine was way more of an influence on Rex than we realised and without him our D has not been the same unit i'd be cool with letting a new GM decide on Rex but I just don't see him as a learning coach and you'd have to be ready to lose several games a year purely on shooting ourselves in the foot or being unprepared. I don't think we are all that far away, much like the Cheifs when Andy Reid came in we have some talent in place we just need someone who can get the most out of everyone on the roster and has us playing smart, disciplined and well-drilled football week in and week out...that alone can cover for a lack of talent and negate the need to have pro-bowlers at every position

We'll be the team that he took his lumps with and then fired him for not winning with Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. Yeah, I also give pause where others are so willing to show Rex the door and I really don't understand the hostility towards him. You make valid points in how the Jets played against the top teams in the league. And to those who criticize his approach offensively should be taking into consideration the lack of ability to stop opponents through the air which led to the reason why such a conservative approach was used as this team was obviously not built to get into shootouts.
This team played hard and were lacking in player personnel which was compounded by the departure of our top 3 CB's. The season was lost before it began. Idzik was too cautious in FA thinking he had a 5-year plan and could build the team in the most cost-effective manner with value in every selection. He was passing on guys that weren't willing to accept his low-ball offers and gambling on guys with history of injuries (for maximum value should they magically stay healthy) and it didn't pan out. I think this team had a vision and direction in taking down these pass-happy, uber-finesse teams and should stay on course but it obviously won't include Idzik. I personally think Rex is still the guy for that vision which was so much brighter a year ago.
More than anything, this season was failed by the GM. He was unable to get the necessary weapons on offense to develop his franchise QB and beyond that, was unable to secure Rex' most vital position at CB which his entire philosophy runs through. Rex never had a chance yet he made no excuses and soldiered on and nearly won many of those games you fairly point out. Keeping Harris, Landry and Pace in there are not necessarily reflections on Rex but of John for not infusing more young talent when he easily could have.
I think that a few upgrades at OG and WR along with stabilizing the secondary and adding youth at LB would make this team competitive right away. This can all be had with our higher picks in each round of the draft and money used appropriately towards talented players at key positions.
