Can't believe I have never seen this before. I knew Pew did research on this but never knew that had done one specific to the US. There's something I don't get here. The original travel ban was enacted immediately, the reason being it was a national security issue. Then this new travel ban was to be enacted in ten days, after being delayed a month from the original ban due to the courts. Is it not a national security issue now? It was so urgent before, but now seems like eh whatever. And why only a 90 day ban? Why not indefinitely if it's a national security issue?

And in this era of judicial activism this structure gives the ban its best chance of passing the courts. Because avoiding inconveniencing foreigners is more important than actual Americans. |

It is a national security issue but they are trying to avoid the political gottcha game that they lived through once. As we all know politics and the status quo is much more important than national security. It isn't indefinite or even a year like Obama's Iraqi ban because the intent is to give the administration time to review and fix the vetting process. This administration likes to do things quickly and assumes 90 wold be more than enough for a process review like it would be in any business. It is still important but because of the politics and complaints and suits the last round the administration realized it needed to give time for this to be rolled out slowly enough so even liberals could understand the purpose. I say liberals because there were enough liberal republicans that couldn't get it either. |
