can someone explain what's going on? With all the positions that need filling ... with a very good running back available, they pick another safety. Is Bowles in charge of the draft too? Or is Maccagnan as big a dummy as Bowles? Yes - a detailed explanation is found about 50 pages back in this thread. ;-) Sorry....I know.....I'm being an asshole. okay ... I went back and read it all ... we're in the process of drafting in twos. Two safeties, two wide receivers, two DBs ... and we'll pick up another TE, RB, and defensive lineman later. It' all perfectly clear to me now.

Draft grades for the jets are all over the map. But Walter Football gave them an A. New York Jets: A Grade Goals Entering the 2017 NFL Draft: The Jets happen to be in the worst shape of any team in the NFL. Like the 49ers and Browns, they are devoid of talent almost everywhere. However, they lack the cap space to do anything about it outside of the draft. With so many holes on the roster, the Jets need to trade down early and often to acquire as many rosterable players as possible. 2017 NFL Draft Accomplishments: The Jets had to move down early and often, as suggested, and that's exactly what they managed to do. General manager Mike Maccagnan did a masterful job of wheeling and dealing throughout the weekend, acquiring resources on numerous occasions. This was absolutely imperative, as Daniel Jeremiah echoed what I wrote in the goal mock prior to the draft: The Jets, at least prior to the draft, had the worst roster in the NFL. Not only did the Jets move down many times, but they also picked up some talented players in the process. They began the weekend by selecting two talented safeties, and yes, they needed two. Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye will automatically improve one of the worst secondaries in the NFL. Meanwhle, three offensive weapons were added in ArDarius Stewart, Chad Hansen and Jordan Leggett. They were quality selections, especially Leggett, who was a steal in the fifth round. I'm sure some will consider this a failure of a draft for the Jets because they didn't acquire a quarterback. However, that was never the plan. Charlie Campbell reported back in January that quarterback was not in play for the Jets because they liked how Christian Hackenberg was progressing behind the scenes. And even if Hackenberg sucks, the 2018 NFL Draft is loaded with better quarterbacks - check out the 2018 NFL Mock Draft for more - so the Jets can just wait to acquire Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen or Josh Allen. The Jets had a terrific draft overall, as Maccagnan did what he could to upgrade the talent on the roster as many ways as possible. There's still a long way to go, but this was a nice start. walterfootball.com/nfldraftgradesteam.phpcan't argue with most of what you're/they're saying ... hope they're right about Hackenburg secretly getting better. What a mystery. At least it will make for an interesting training camp and pre-season schedule.

I'd give the draft a solid B. All of the picks (except Donahue) seemed to go where they were anticipated to be picked prior to the draft. Adams, Hansen and Leggett were very good value for their draft slots. That being said, I'm SHOCKED we didn't go CB before round 6. That being said, Macc's best work in the draft so far has been in the 7th round and with UFAs, so maybe Clark or Jones can develop into something. Jones is intriguing. Converted to CB this year after being a WR earlier and tested well at the combine. Agreed. I'm actually pretty OK with this draft. You were never going to solve or fill every need in one draft. The back end of the secondary looks to be solved and if Stewart and Leggett turn out to be solid starters it was a successful draft.

As our resident Clemson expert, how do you feel about the Leggett pick? I don't think he is the next Tony Gonzalez, but I can see him being a Chris Baker type that could wind up starting for us for a couple of years and offering decent production.

Based on where he was selected I think it was a good pick. Despite coming out of CU's system, he is best suited to be a traditional inline TE. He has great hands but his motivation at times seems questionable. Although this past year it was much better than his junior year. We'll see, there isn't a whole lot of competition at the TE spot with this team so unless he is a total bust in camp, he should see plenty of reps.

Hopefully the kid shows up motivated and ready to bust his ass for us, and we could have a solid TE.

The proof will be determined in the long run. That said, I have read a load of post-draft reviews and almost all of them were very positive. And the ones that weren't generally mentioned that we didn't fill all of our needs. Shit... we didn't have 40 picks in the draft. This is basically a total rebuild. It also looks like it was a concerted effort to change the culture. Macc went out and got tough players with leadership qualities. Reading the Hampur during the draft would make you think the Jets had a horrible draft. And let's be honest here... nobody on this board is a draft expert. Some of the pre-draft man-crushes have been pathetically bad. And yes, I have been guilty of that many times too. The reality is that not all college players, even some of the best ones, translate well to the NFL. I loved OBJ a few years back and was pissed that we didn't get him. And that pick looks even better now. But had he come to a team as dysfunctional as the Jets, I could see him being considered a bust by now because he has some big time immaturity issues. Right player / wrong team plays into it big. If I could pick one thing to come out of this draft, I would hope that some of the players we drafted help to change the culture on the lockeroom. If that has begun, then I think it was successful. I personally went into this draft hoping the team would basically do exactly what they did. Not saying I wanted them to take the players that they chose but to try to draft BPA, fill the holes and not try to act like they could fix the shitload of problems this team has in one draft. For that reason alone, I think Macc did a good job. Now it's time to see if Bowles can man up and become a good coach and leader. I'm not sure he can do that but he has one year to prove it or he will be out the door. I would love to see this team at least play hard this year.

I think Mac did a pretty damn good job this weekend. I would've liked him to trade Pryor and Richardson. Oh well. His first three picks are all alpha males, actual leadership. Not just quiet leaders who always answer questions after games. These guys can set the tone of a game. I think Mac is pretty safe right now. He's built up he back end of this roster pretty nicely and that's the way a rebuild goes. The pressure is now on Bowles to put these pieces together. And he should in no way let mccown play one game unless there's injuries. I'm excited to see where these young guys take us.

There are reports this AM that we are still trying to trade Sheldon -- probably was always more likely that we would be able to get a conditional 2018 pick for him, given all the red flags that go along with him plus the $8MM cap hit.

I think this draft probably guaranteed Mac will be here in 2018. Bowles has a lot to prove. After the team performed well in 2015, he failed last year. I get that some of the things we're out of his control but the biggest red flag for me was a coach that lost control of the team. And I sure as hell didn't like his off-season response that guys are going to be late sometimes. This team is very flawed. They'll likely lose a shitload of games but if they play hard, I will be happy. But if Bowles loses the lockeroom again or the team does not play hard, he will absolutely be fired.

I met him at one of those on-field batting practices at Citifield before a Met game, him, Rex, Pettine, Mrs. Rex, a few others. I figured I'd throw him a softball just to generate some small talk so like an excited fan I asked him "Hey, what do you think of that Joe McMknight?!?" Said in a gruff dismissive voice "He's a twerp. That kid has a LOT to learn." So I just walked away and took a selfie with Rex. _
