Raiders, Jets still talking the hind legs off McCloughan
Posted by Mike "I'm out TMZ'ing TMZ" Florio on January 6, 2015, 7:33 PM EST
At a time when multiple reports continue to indicate that it’s a done deal former 49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan will become the G.M. in Washington, PFT continues to hear that the deal isn’t done.
One of the reasons for the delayed consummation is that multiple other teams continue to pursue him. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Raiders and Jets continue to have interest in McCloughan.
Moreover, the negotiations with Washington (which are ongoing) entail multiple issues. One of those issues likely has become whether McCloughan will have control over the roster and the draft. Currently, team president and G.M. Bruce Allen has those powers. If McCloughan gets those powers in D.C., it will amount to a de facto demotion for Allen.
As noted earlier in the day, Allen would emerge with enhanced job security, since he’d slide into a role that doesn’t carry with it accountability for the success or failure of the football team. If Allen keeps the power, he’ll likewise retain the responsibility, and McCloughan will simply be joining the team as Allen’s No. 2.
McCloughan most recently worked in the Seattle front office, assisting G.M. John Schneider with the stocking of one of the best rosters in football.

Not sure why anyone would want to go to Washington. I think the Jets job is much better.

It's absolutely better I don't care how much people want to complain about Woody, Snyder is the worst fucking owner in the league and meddles in everything. Washington, and their front office in particular, has been a dysfunctional fucking mess for years. At least the Jets have had a good amount of postseason success over the last 15 years and don't have a reputation for serving up walking papers to GM's and HC's like hotcakes.

Woody needs to move on this asap! Yes, the Redskins have been dysfunctional for the past 2 decades. Having said that, it is a storied franchise that is attractive despite DS. Let's be objective. I hate the Skins as much as anyone here. But when the team owns DC even with their lousy record the past 20 years. Wody needs to give the keys to the franchise to Scott. Talent wins in the NFL and Scott knows talent -- just look at his past performances.

I do not know about it being a storied franchise although they did have their moments. But as long as Dan Snyder is around there will be a lot of question marks with the direction of this team. Mcloughlin would be a good get, I would love for him to get swiped up by the jets...but as a VP of player personnel and Scouting director. That's where his strength lies. His other options are the Raiders to work with MacKenzie which he won't do and if he goes to the redskins, Allen will have the final say on player personnel so it comes down to which franchise would be better to work with.

It's a bad job by Casserly and Wolf that they didn't get this guy in here sooner, and now there is a tug of war for his services. He's the best candidate by far. Look at the org's he's been with and helped draft for... GB, SF, and Seattle. I'd also give the guys the keys and let him run the show with Elliot Wolf as his assistant. This way if he falls off the wagon we have someone in the wings ready and capable of taking over.

The guy is an alchoholic who fell off the wagon when he previously had the GM job. I think they'd probably love to have him as a #2 but are not offering him the GM job. Washington is probably thinking the same, keeping control in Allen's hands even if they give him the GM title. And why would Eliot Wolf leave a great organization like the Packers to take a similar role with the Jets, just because his father was hired as a consultant for a couple of months?

Not saying Elliot would come here, but people think he's still too young, so it was just a WISH list lol... I understand the logic about Scot falling off the wagon, but if he has beaten his deamon's, then he's at least worth the gamble, as he's probably the best talent evaluator out there amongst all the choices.

PFT said this morning that McCloughan to the Skins is "imminent." I hope that's not true and we can get him.

He has been offered the GM job by the Redskins and we are only willing to offer Head of Scouting. The only way we get him is if we overpay the shit out of him...which is the kind of move that Woody desperately needs to make to get this franchise on the right track.

We still owe the Redskins for taking like 6 of our Free agents, including L. Coles, that one season. Then traded us back a broken down Coles for a young, feasting Santana Moss.
