New York and DC have business talent. Not necessarily tech talent. The devil will be in the details. Local pols could have made them guarantee certain things with regard to hiring from the area. I dont think the end number will be anywhere close to 50k. My guess is they are going to ship some from Seattle, import some H1-Bs and fill in the rest with locals. Ok and? Capitalism at work. There is no greater economic system than capitalism. But I dont not support it in it's absolute free form. Checks and balances are always necessary. If Microsoft was vulnerable to anti-trust back in the 90s then Amazon and Google blow that threshold out of the water in my opinion. Like I said before, I want to learn the details of the deal before judging it but my sense tells me that a man like Bezos doesnt lose on deals. And these politicians do nothing but have their constituents interests lose.

And Microsoft is a bit different. You couldn’t run a computer nor open a spreadsheet without Microsoft. I can buy motor oil from amazon or from my mechanic. I can search for porn on google or bing.

Yeah I don’t get the hate for Amazon. Except for the federal govt subsidizing the postal rates. Wait till they gentrify the fuck out of LIC. 1979 I went to a 6 story building in LIC; dark cobblestone streets; just like King of New York. Inside was my friends sublet; except he was subletting from Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads. Did you say Gentrify?

The place was DEAD by 5pm and full of hookers and crack. I counted inventory as a young CPA on a Saturday and the crack viles were all over the street. it’s amazing to see what the place has become today.

50 thousand or even 25 thousand people making money and paying NYC and NYS taxes, as opposed to the folks paying nada getting gentrified? I'll take it. Let them move to LI, another reason to GTFO the island I moved north and became a gentrifier, and enjoying every minute of it

I am split on this. Basically tax breaks to bring in 25k jobs makes sense to me because the 25k workers will be paying taxes so it is probably a net neutral. Add in if any supporting businesses come in that is another bonus to the town. The only issue is that if there isn't new land to build then you really are only swapping people out because you aren't actually getting people in. This assumes that there isn't a large pool of people in the area that are unemployed but will meet the new job criteria at Amazon. In all seriousness, this would be a concern. Unless its a processing area, the locals probably arent going to get hired. There will be a lot of out of towners, contract workers, etc. Gotta see how all the numbers play out.

At the end of the day, if your state has to offer tax incentives to draw business, your tax rate is too high.

Agreed. We ordered window blinds on Amazon. Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, Target, etc all sell blinds. They all are comparable price and all deliver. Amazon just did it way quicker, a little easier, and about the same cost or cheaper.
