Opinions wanted on the following workplace environment: Shithole Workplace #1 (SW1) has a history of poor hiring practices (nepotism, finding the cheapest labor, hiring the wrong people for technical positions, etc). As a matter of fact, at one point years ago, SW1 had an IT Dept where only 10% of the employees had computer science/information science degrees (the rest were liberal arts, library science, history, etc). With this kind of environment, shit hit the fan on a regular and daily basis. SW1 has recently went full PC hot guy I'd like to blow. Now, if tech person A has a disagreement* with non-tech person B on a technical issue** (see below), person B can run to a manager, claim A is being disrespectful of B's opinion, and A is assumed guilty until proven innocent. (Realistically, no A has ever been proven innocent). Person B, in order to make things more serious, can claim victimhood by being a woman or a minority, making A's alleged "abuse" 10x worse. Also, the number of years of experience that A and B have in the field of the technical issue are irrelevant. Also, in this environment, Bs feel free to lie outright to get an advantage on performance reviews, being challenged again, etc * disagreement: nothing inappropriate, no insults, but person A telling person B "I think you're wrong" or "I don't think you have any experience in that field" **technical issue: could be anything from software development, configuring routers, configuring a server, etc. Fire away gentlemen! Sounds pretty typical. I disagree on the value you place on a college degree to the IT world though. Corporate America is totally PC now. Not much can be done about it from a workers level. I didn't realize how widespread this is. Maybe they should change majoring in computer science to majoring in computer feelings. |
