n this case it's not just the question of illegal (albeit creative) formations - it's more the attempt to gain the system (and refs) with the slow reporting and the quick snaps. Exactly. It's not about 'football' per se anymore: they didn't win that had anything to do with the mental or physical, athletic superiority of the game of football.

Troy Aikman was on Fatcessa complaining thoughtfully that too many NFL games are getting influenced by referees - that the fineness of the new rules allows too much interpretation, too much adjudicating. And he's right: the more rules you put in, the more ticky-tack they are, the more involved the refs will be in EVERY game. I honestly believe that is a deliberate strategy on the part of the NFL. This way they can always rule in favor of who they want to be the victor.

I honestly believe that is a deliberate strategy on the part of the NFL. This way they can always rule in favor of who they want to be the victor. The NFL needs to tread carefully. This is why the NBA became unwatchable for me. At some point in the late 80's when I was little they decided to make the game about the stars and not the teams. As if losing to Jordan 90% of the time was not bad enough, we had to sit through endless hagiographic promos for Jordan vs ____________. But more importantly, the gulf betweeen those who got the calls and those who didn't was never wider. Refs assumed a central role in a game by deciding traveling, charging, technicals and just regular fouls. TONS and TONS of plays where travelling could have been called on Jordan or Kobe - but it wasn't because why let a foul get in the way of a nice play (or a win). Now these playoffs - the freakin' playoffs - when refs are supposed to recede into the background (I think we can all agree) - you had the DAL/DET game decided on a hugely questionable non-call (picked up the flag!!) and the DAL/GB game decided by the worst call I can remember for a long time. And then you had the NE/BAL game with the refs essentially losing control over the game by being gamed by NE. No game is really decided by one play - but look at these games - all with far too much ref input - and you see where this style of play quickly becomes a 'tragedy of the commons' thing.

While some of these posts are funny, it takes away from the larger point of NE's ongoing cheating. Don't get me wrong, Shula is a scumbag who cheated too (AFCG 1982: mudbowl). But it is noteworthy his discription of NE's coach (Beli-cheat). Harbaugh is very well respected coach in the NFL. This if a franchise who always looks to push the limits. You cheat for a reason: to gain a competitive advantage. Down 28-14, NE employs a new formation (I don't care what the NFL said...we all know the League favors NE) that allowed them to comeback against a team that was dominating them on both sides of the ball. Don't tell me Belicheat and McDaniels are that smart because their track records without SparklePony says the complete opposite. Once a cheater, always a cheater. + infinity billion. Belicheat and McCheaters even ran a sneaky play where SparklePony faked a handoff and threw a pass instead! They were clearly trying to use deception to cheat their way past a superior team. Those dirtbags . . . anything for a competitive advantage!!!!

Those dirtbags . . . anything for a competitive advantage!!!! Well lack of sportsmanship in a sport is the best competitive advantage. Like SparklePony's ridiculous flop from a few weeks ago - i think that should be as ubiquitous as the play action pass. All teams should practice flopping and the QBs most talented at it - well they should earn their just reward. There needs to be tons more flopping because it's already been proven to be one of wonderful things about soccer and a hallmark of championship success. Hey - it you ain't cheatin you ain't tryin - amirite?? Of special note to the trained eye, is that SparklePony doesn't really decide to go down until he sees the HEAD REF (white cap) is right beside him and screened from view by Douzable. He tries to time his fall with the ref turning towards him. Truly nuanced attempt at cheating. What was it you were saying about dirtbags again . . .SparklePony is better than this - and he doesn't need to do it. But the Belichikian ethos has infected the whole team - who are a) the most highly penalized team in the league this season IIRC b) cry for flags every opportunity they get and c) try harder than anyone to draw flags. Pick plays have become passe - now its clear receivers are taught to run directly into DBs because the resulting scrum stands a great chance to be called PI or illegal contact.

Would have been nice if Brady had been flagged for whining to the referees like a big baby in the divisional game. But I guess that was too much to hope for as I assume the referees wanted to get out of Boston alive.

I watch that gif all I see is a violent assault on Tom Brady. Douzable should be sharing a cell with Hernandez. Tom was probably on his way to give his helmet to an orphan who is dying of cancer.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves. You have to understand that for a certain type of Jets fan, whining about the Pa triots is a lot less painful than actually watching the Jets. It's also gives them a way to satisfy (if only vicariously) their deepest, secret desire: watching a good team play winning football. That said, congrats Jets fans on the new moves. Other than wanting to beat them I don't particularly harbor any ill will for the Jets. I did think Rex was a crappy, one dimensional coach. Bowles should be a big improvement.
