Back in the day, there was a PD code you could call the operator with. It was called a spin number. Cops used it to do investigations or call the station house. It was free. Somehow one of my mongo college friends got this number (before I was a cop) and he also, for some strange reason had Nipsy Russells phone number. He would use the spin number to call Nipsy Russells house after we had had few drinks. This was from a payphone on Kissena Blvd in Queens.
For some dumb reason Nipsy always answered. The one call I remember went like this;
Nipsy; Hello?
Mongo: Say a poem mutherfucker say it!!!
Nipsy: You call on the phone, to tell you a poem, now leave me alone. Click.
True story. The world is full of dicks.

Apparently, there was violence this eve at the vigil for Nipsy. This would never have happened in the name of Nipsy Russell. I stand by my original long-winded, head-shaking tale of phony phone calls. Much more compelling than this predictable, inevitable savagery.
