I think you can bet your ass that we're taking Mariota if he falls to #6.
I mean, Chan Gailey aka Poppa Bear Chip Kelly?
Mariota behind center with Decker, Harvin, Kerley and a kid like Justin Hardy spread out wide with Amaro at TE and a punishing runner like Ivory in the backfield?
And backed up by a Todd Bowles defense with an MO to swarm?
Yeah, I'll take that.

I'd rather take Gurley. Given that Gailey made spiller look like Barry sanders, I'd prefer to have Ivory and Gurley owning the NFL rushing title annually over mariota who might not be a massive upgrade over Geno in his system.... I know that sounds fucked, but in year 1 at least I don't think the stat line would be dramatically different.

And as far as prospects go, I don't think mariota is as good a Qb as Gurley is a RB. The latter is a true blue franchise back

I'm in the same boat as Paradis and HN and I don't think Mariota is worth the 6th overall. I'd prefer a strategy that focuses on a combination of WR/OT/RB in the first three rounds to set the building blocks for the future.
This draft is very strong at WR again and also at OT, so I want to pick those positions early.
As an example: Parker in the 1st, Gurley in the 2nd, OT in the third.
Another changing positions: Peat in the 1st, DGB in the 2nd, Johnson in the 3rd.
Those are likely scenarios that I would be ecstatic with.

Although I have my personal preferences, any combo of Parker/DGB/Hardy Gurley/David Johnson and Flowers/Collins/Green is fine by me. Lot of decent G prospects too. |

Gordon's the real deal. I would be surprised if he had anything but a productive year in the NFL. For a few years anyway...
But, Gurley though... that man is special. You hear about the careers of guys like Dickerson, Campbell, Payton, and Peterson - Gurley is of that stock.... Not saying he's bound for stardom, but thats who those guys are. They're freaks. Specimens. Guys that were born to play the game.

As much as I would love to see Gurley in green and white, there is no way you can touch him at 6 due to his injury history -- not just the ACL. He missed time in 2013 with an ankle injury and has also been limited with a hip issue that limited his carries as a freshman -- although I don't think he missed any games due to the hip.
The guy is clearly a stud who has all the tools -- if health was not an issue he would be the best RB prospect since AP.

Given that Gailey made Spiller look like Barry Sanders, I'd rather just sign Spiller to a 2-3 year deal at around $4 million per and pair him up with Ivory. I love Gurley, but I'm not taking him at #6. Maybe before he tore up his knee, but certainly not now. And as Lithfan pointed out, it's not just the knee. He has proven that he has a tendency to get banged up and miss games in the past. I understand that there are some concerns surrounding Mariota. But you could say the same thing about basically any QB prospect to come out of college not named Andrew Luck or John Elway. There's still no doubt that the kid possesses awesome physical talent, has a good head on his shoulders, and is perfectly suited for the spread offense that Gailey is bound to implement. Would I sell the farm to move up for him? No But would I take him at #6 if he's still there? Every day of the damn week. IDK, I guess I just don't care if Mariota never develops into a truly elite QB along the lines of Rodgers, Peyton or SparklePony. I'd be perfectly content if he's in the same league as guys like Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford and Cam Newton for the next decade. |

I am hoping he goes to an NFC team -- I really want to be able to root for the guy at the next level, but it scares me that he could go the the Phins or Pats. If he does not drop to the 2nd, then maybe an NFC team will grab him mid/late first and he can haunt the Giants. |
