Good read. I wouldn't expect to draft a QB this year guys. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- www.wsj.com/articles/jets-new-offensive-coordinator-goes-with-what-hes-got-1421287808?ru=yahoo?mod=yahoo_itpChan Gailey Has a History of Overachieving With Shaky Offensive PersonnelTodd Bowles was officially named the Jets’ new head coach on Wednesday, and it appears he has already made his biggest off-season decision, hiring veteran play-caller Chan Gailey to be the team’s offensive coordinator. Gailey, who will replace Marty Mornhinweg, has a history of overachieving with shaky offensive personnel—just the sort he’s inheriting with the Jets, who ranked 28th in scoring and 22nd in yards this season. But his arrival may also signal an reluctance on the part of Bowles and new general manager Mike Maccagnan to emphasize offense when making personnel decisions. It could also indicate that the Jets aren’t planning to draft a quarterback this coming off-season, as Gailey has never started a rookie quarterback in his 12 seasons as either a head coach or offensive coordinator. This would be good news for Geno Smith, as Gailey has started a quarterback already on his team’s roster in five of his six stops. The one exception: The 2000 Dolphins, when he shocked the NFL by starting an untested 28-year-old journeyman named Jay Fiedler. Gailey, who is 63, also has shown a willingness to unleash a mobile quarterback like Smith. In 1997 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he orchestrated an offense in which Kordell Stewart passed for 21 touchdowns and ran for 11 more. Stewart’s play spiraled downward when Gailey left the Steelers in 1998 to become head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. What’s most surprising about Gailey’s career is that his offenses have done almost as well in points and yards with journeyman quarterbacks as with Hall of Famers such as Troy Aikman and John Elway. At least Gailey has a low bar to clear: The Jets have finished in the top 10 in yards or points just one time in the past 16 seasons, and since 2011, their average finish has been 28th in points and 26th in yards. —Michael Salfino

Is it even official yet?
I'll be honest, I'm not enamoured with Gailey like I am Bowles, but there's something to be said for his success as an OC with garbage QB's.

I agree with you on both Bowles and Gailey. I love the Bowles hire, like Macaggnan, butbnot thrilled with Gailey, although I get the logic. First time head coach with a defensive background wanting to bring in an experienced OC. I guess we also need to try to separate Gailey the OC from Gailey the HC.

I don't get that logic. Why wouldn't they draft a QB to develop, maybe they don't take Mariotta or Winston if they are there at 6 (I would disagree with that), but why not one in the later rounds to develop?

I have a suspicion that Gailey is also being brought on so Bowles can learn offense from him. After all , even though Bowles was a D coach, he is now the coach of the O as well. Who better than Chan Gailey, a guy not married to any one system who has a knack for playing to his teams' strength and a reputation as a very good play caller, to learn from.

I still don't get it, even looking at that chart. It's telling me he hasn't had a offense scoring in the top 10 since 2001…? This is good how?
I get the whole experience factor for Bowles. But meh…this is gonna be something I'll need to see to really get behind.

Bring in an experienced OC who is not a system coach but an X's and O's guy who looks for match ups, weaknesses and strengths. A guy to teach the Jets O how to play "competently". Remember, the Jets O is not a matter of tweaking the motor of a finely tuned engine. It is a jalopy that needs a complete overhaul. I truly believe Gailey is the right hire. After a few years Bowles will have an Offensive grasp of things, Gailey will re-retire or become a "consultant", and Bowles will hire a new OC.

Buffalo should be in that spot by the time we start hitting our stride.

if the plan is to keep Harvin with Decker, then you cannot deny the Jets have a very talented 1-2 punch at WR - no matter the scheme. Gailey's offense is a good fit for Kerley too, and if you add Cooper in the first then you have the kind of receiving group that can make any QB look good given Gailey's track record. it would no doubt be Gailey's best group of skill players since the Cowboys in the 90's, perhaps the only exception being the 2008 Chiefs... hopefully this is why Bowles was so intent on retaining his services.

Just because you draft a QB doesn't mean you have to play him from day 1, but I get the premise of the article. Because of the situation we're in, we need to brace for the fact that Geno Smith may be our starter next season....
If anyone can get something out of Geno it's Gailey. He got 22 TD passes out of Thigpen and Fitzpatrick owes this guy millions for making him look serviceable enough to garner a contract extension in Buffalo

When I first heard it I scratched my head but this is a solid hire. Gailey will help stabilize the offense while Bowles gets acclimated to being a HC. The fact that he can get production out of trash makes him the perfect hire for us at this time(even tho Bowles would have taken him where ever he went). Gailey is an older guy, once Bowles gets acclimated with becoming an HC, Gailey will move on and somebody else will run our offense....

New HC and new GM historically make a change at QB. That hold more merit than this

As stated earlier, he's not the sexiest of hires but I'm impressed with the track record. Its not just that he had non-hall of fame QBs, he 16th in points and 19th in yards with probably the the worst QB (or close to it) in the league that year.
Seriously - Tomczack, Fiedler, Stewart, Thigpin and Fitzpatrick. There couldn't have been more than 2-3 teams that would trade their QB straight up for his guy in any of those years and in the case of Tomczak, Fiedler and Thigpin, maybe none. I'm optimistic that he can help Geno, who for the first time in his career is going to have a HC that gives a shit about his side of the ball and will invest the resources in helping him develop.
Gman said - So just because a rookie QB has never started on a Chan Gailey offense the Jets won't draft a QB? I don't get that logic. Why wouldn't they draft a QB to develop, maybe they don't take Mariotta or Winston if they are there at 6 (I would disagree with that), but why not one in the later rounds to develop?
I agree but would take it even a step further. Even if they draft Mariotta or Winston, I expect Geno to be the starter next year. I'd love to see either one of those guys with a hat and a headset on the sideline for at least one year. As a general rule (Luck, RGIII and Wilson notwithstanding), rookie QBs stink. And both of these guys will come into the season with significant flaws in their game. I don't want to see either one anywhere near the field.
