ESPN debated endlessly what possible punishment could come down on the Flats*. Those are not "League Sources", that's gossip of the TMZ variety

I guess you can't text down to the sidelines. Who knew. Oh well, everyone does it. Was any advantage gained?

Only in the NFL would a GM be sanctioned with fine, draft pick and other possible "sanctions" for texting playcalling (as if anyone would listen to him), but in true cheating (read:Patriots) long investigations are conducted to enable the cheating to be swept under the rug. UNBELIEVABLE The rumor is that the Browns will be AWARDED an extra 1st round draft pick as their punishment.

UNBELIEVABLE Pump the brakes. 1. Nothing happened to Browns yet. 2. Nothing decided on Flats* yet. I'm pretty sure everyone's decided that the Patsies are cheaters

Seems like a silly rule. The GM could walk down to the sidelines or into the locker room and tell the coaches what to call. Why would texting be any different? Unless they consider them another set of eyes in the sky, but it just seems like a dumb rule.
On the other hand, if it is a rule, they should be punished for breaking it.

ESPN debated endlessly what possible punishment could come down on the Flats*. Those are not "League Sources", that's gossip of the TMZ variety Their may be punishment built in to the violation discussed with none on the books for playing with the game balls. Add in that the Pats arent first time offenders so that will have to be part of the punishment. Dont think deflategate is as cut and dried as what happened in Cleveland.

Unless they consider them another set of eyes in the sky, but it just seems like a dumb rule. On the other hand, if it is a rule, they should be punished for breaking it. You're not peeling back enough layers of this onion. This goes much deeper. Goodell is aligned with Kraft. Kraft's organization uses advanced surveillance techniques to intercept signals, steal signs, etc. Goodell knows this but also has to deal with the perception (reality) that he goes soft on the Patriots and turns a blind eye to their cheating. Thus, he doesn't want the Patriots to have the opportunity to so easily conduct their cheating because he knows it will only lead to that cheating being discovered by a news organization, the other team, the officials, etc. and then he'd be pressured to deal with it (like he had to deal with it during Spygate (see the destruction of evidence), and now with Deflategate (see the reinflation of the footballs and the distraction from the scandal by making sure the Patriots won the SB using footballs that the League has told everyone were properly inflated). The bottom line is this - Instead of Goodell being forced to punish the drunk driver, he's trying to hide the car keys by punishing other teams who make it likely that he'll have to deal with another Patriots scandal. He knows there isn't any difference between the GM saying something on the sideline or via text message....but he knows the Patriots can intercept it, and he doesn't want to deal with a Patriots Textgate. Just think about it. It's much easier to destroy some video tapes than it is to destroy every cell phone in America. Sometimes the most straightforward explanation is the REAL explanation! It just makes too much sense.

Just imagine if the Browns GM went to send another text down to the sideline in a game against the Patriots and he sees Belidick staring back at him!

You can already put personnel in the booth with a birds eye view, and they're in direct radio contact. How does texting from within the stadium really give an advantage? I suppose if someones watching the broadcast feed and texting.... Either way, as i stated, douchebag HCs, GMs, and owners who ignore the written rules SHOULD be punished. Im sure the league sent memos and such that were arrogantly ignored.
