I've been iffy on taking a RB this high since the the media people were saying Reggie Bush was the second coming. I've never watched this guy but I'm guessing he's not as good as BUsh was in college? even if he was a RB is just not that important anymore. At least not without a QB. I see both your points about needing to surrond our "QB" (I'm using the term loosely) with talent but lacking a real QB is exactly why I think we need to build a dominant defense, not just a good or even a great one. Because as I see it no matter who is surrounding our current "QB"s we'll average 20-24 points per game at best. That's why I'd rather add what I think to be the missing piece for this defense to be dominant (someone that can get upwords of 12 sacks a year) rather than a talented but ultimately dependant on the "QB" offensive player. I hear you -- and I certainly wouldn't kill the pick if we want edge rusher and offensive playmaker 1 & 2. As far as Gurley vs Bush -- full disclosure, I am a Georgia grad so I am not exactly unbiased -- but I think Gurley is a much more complete back than Bush was. He did not put up numbers like Bush did in college -- in part due to injury and in part due to how he was used by Coach Richt at Georgia. He was always splitting time with other backs. But Gurley is the complete package: he can block, good receiver out of the backfield, he can run through a defender or he has the speed to beat defenders to the edge. He was also a great kick returner -- averaging over 38 yards per return with a couple of TDs on limited opportunities. Hindsight is 20-20, but Bush is a 3rd down/change of pace back -- he was supposed to be the 2nd coming of Gale Sayers coming out of college, and while he has had a decent pro career, he has not lived up to expectations. In my opinion, the only thing to stop Gurley from being an all-time great would be injuries. Given his history, I think 6 may be too high for him, but if we do pick him, I will be the first to order a Jets Gurley jersey.

Given his history, I think 6 may be too high for him, but if we do pick him, I will be the first to order a Jets Gurley jersey. I only gave the Bush example because I remember he was the consensus top pick and when the Texans picked Mario Williams instead of him Casserly was blasted in the media. I don't follow college football and to highlight that point I didn't even know Gurley was a Georgia product until I read your post. So I'm just going on the value I place on position rather than any knowledge of the draft eligible players, because well I have none. Ceteris paribus, I'll take an edge rusher over an offensive skill player because I just think whoever he is, is just going to be wasted until we find a real QB. Having said this I'd want a good player rather than a bad one no matter what the position so I'm just hoping Mac has the balls to do what Charlie Casserly did and pick who he thinks is going to be good rather than trying to look good for the press like Tanny always seemed to angle for.

If we took Gurley @ 6 I would be the first to make a fire Mac and Bowels thread.

Gonna have to edit this now to make Ray my rnd 2 selection.... Ray or DGB in the second? Well DGB of course, hands down. He's in another world when it comes to his potential in the NFL if he matures into a professional. I think picks 14-20 is the stretch that he'll go in rnd 1 if he goes at all. I worry about a new regime wiping him off the boards completely though.

I doubt DGB is there in the second and if he was it would be a no brainer to me.
