So he ran a 4.42 but if he ran a 4.37 he'd be a 1st rounder?
That's the stuff that drives me nuts.

At Worst he will be Ted Guinn JR. At Best he will be Desean Jackson. I think he will be somewhere in the middle similar to a Santana Moss type WR. I Think there were better receivers out there but ill wait to see how he develops. He definitely brings a dimension to this offense that we have lacked for quite some time, and i think he will be a nice compliment to the current cast of WR's. H e has the potential to do a lot of damage in the slot with some shallow crossing routes, screens and obviously the "GO" route. IMO Smith MUST demonstrate the ability to be effective in the short and intermediate routes. In order for a "deep threat" to actually be a threat they need to make defenders honor the shorter routes, otherwise they can just sit back and play him deep all day. Smith won't be able to just run past defenders like he did at OSU. Just like guys not needing to run a 4.3 to be a good deep threat, running a 4.3 doesn't guarantee being a deep threat either. There have been more than a few deep threat WRs who never showed an ability or willingness to run shallow routes.

Think its interesting that the only place i am seeing this pick questioned (if only by the minority) is here - I wonder if that because so many of us (myself included) had particular faves like Parker or Strong or DGB. Of course the pundits only know so much too, but Mcshay lists this as our best pick of the draft. If nothing else we know the guy is a legit deep threat (we prob havent had since braylon) and shows up in big games (played well down the stretch for OSU against great competition).
BTW - interesting note i picked up from his press conference was that the Jets hadnt brought him in and he wasnt expecting them to be an interested team.

For what it's worth, Trent Dilfer and Todd McShay were both drooling all over the kid when we picked him

I liked what they said about him doing well running short routes at his pro day. You hope him being used mostly as a deep threat was more a product of Ohio St's offense, but who really knows. We'll see eventually, lol.

After some initial skepticism, this pick has grown on me immensely. I like that they clearly went with the BPA approach at #6, then went for more of a need basis at #37. I think his skill set was the missing ingredient for our receiving corps and our now top 3-4 receiver's game's complement each other perfectly. Can't remember the last time I've been this excited, if ever, about the way the FO has handled free agency and the draft in an off-season.
