I "raced" home and got here 20 minutes before posttime. I didn't know anything about the starters yet; what I do is watch them walk (or trot if they're excited) as they go from the paddock, on to the track. I picked 3,8,13,18,19 with emphasis on Pharoah , in the few seconds I could see them go. No idea I had picked the favorite, only to find out when he won. What do you feel is a better indicator; light step or heavy one? I always think the longer races favor the heavy stepper, but I don't know crap, lol.

I look for fluid movement of the hind legs, stepping evenly underneath themselves (each leg going the same distance underneath, not one shorter). Definitely would prefer to see a 'heavier' step though I've never used that as an indicator actually. That would indicate to me lack of discomfort in any of the hind legs/muscles and those are the ones they use to propel themselves in the gallop. If there's any way to catch a replay, No. 2 was literally dead lame on one of his hind legs I think the left one IIRC. Forgot to check where he finished but I bet not well. It's hard to tell from the brief clips they show of them walking especially since they're not straight on the side (perpendicular) but it's fun to see how much I can see in those few seconds and at least pick the group. At the last minute when No. 10 (the Gary Stevens horse) walked into the gate he had freed up a lot from his warmup and was moving much better so I added him and I guess he came in second?
