Spent sun morning coaching a 6'7" 16 year old in doubles. His dad thinks he can go to the next level and compete state level HS; get a DIII scholarship, whateva. That's right, a 16 year old. It's a process Watching Isner tapes? This is the only video I show; I charted some of it. The commitment to attacking the net; coming in EVERY TIME. That is California tennis. This is the greatest Serve and volley match (off grass) - both show amazing commitment to coming in. you can easily count the number of attacking players that won the title (TONY TRABERT, Fred Stolle) Edberg was so beat down by this match, that he made many mental mistakes against Chang. Stefan had a Championship point; hit the return long. Brutal.

Quick serve, handshake,...congrats on the win.. then off to the pub. Why waste an hour proving the obvious.

Adolescents are taught the baseline game; few can stomach the losing if they try to add S&V. They will walk away and make excuses. Sampras had a coach during that time; he forced that issue and made Pete switch. Pete had the goods... Interestingly, at club/NRTP/USTA league you can clean up playing S&V. We shemps play the "Loser's Game", down here at the mortal level. Because the # of unforced errors is SO high at amatuer level, attacking and coming in gets you lots of free points. I swear I have seen this; I saw it at a 65 n Over National Tournament. The S&V player was solid enough t force the issue. Yet, thehigher you go in skill, those guys can break down any game. So your FH, BH and Serve all have to be bullet-proof. That's why few can make attacking their style.

Flitted and floated around the court. Attacking style is the best. He's still in really good shape and plays very well. I watch him in that MacEnroe masters league.

Serve and volley game doesn't work every point any more. Courts are slower and racket technology has advanced to where it is too easy to get passed. They attack in different ways now. Watch Federer. He'll hit a short ball to get his opponent to a place on the court that he doesn't want to be and then pass him.

That's right in the late 80's they slowed the courts down; the hard courts. Added more grit. "Fans" were crying that their $50 got them 75 minutes of two guys blasting serves past each other.
BTW Did you see Beckers serve just miss the camera behind Edberg? What a bomb. lol
