Memphis is awful. We went to the International Blues Challenge down there a few years ago--some friends play in a blues band. Awesome blues fest, outstanding time--Beale Street, the Orpheum Theatre, the music, the bourbon, the people, incredible. 2-3 dozen bars, you get a wrist band and can walk into any venue and and listent to live music almost around the clock for a long weekend. But we tried to walk 2 blocks off of Beale Street one night and there were police stanchions up keeping the locals out. Or so we thought. When we approached the fine coppers and asked who they were keeping out--they told us they weren't keeping anyone OUT, they were keeping us IN. For our safety. Literally one cop said "you don't want to come out here". Other than that 2-3 square block area, everything else we saw was a pit. Actually, we woke up early one morning and walked out of the "safety zone" and all of the locals must have been sleeping off their haze so we ventured down to the Mississippi, went to the Lorraine Hotel where MLK was shot (perfectly preserved with a new viewing stand from where James Earl Ray pulled the trigger), did a quick self guided tour and immediately went back to the safety zone. Really a depressing, dangerous, awful pit of a place._ Never been, but wanted to go some day. Not sure about it now.

Some years back, my company decided that we needed to visit schools in several cities around the country to talk to teachers. I got chosen to fly to Memphis and travel with the sales reps who knew the area. Whoa, the neighborhoods these schools are in, scary. It's amazing what teachers and students have to do just to go to school there. I was glad we went during the day. Can't imagine how it is there now.

Totally off topic but I went to a UT football game years ago and on the way to the stadium we walked by a fenced in area with rushed out cars and trucks all over the place. I asked the guy from TN what that was all about. UT has a program where they study the rate of decomposition of cadavers in different conditions. Apparently in the medical examiners field it was a big deal. This explains why JetsInsider is still around. It is? Whoa.
