Based on reviewing data in Spotrac and Over-The-Cap, here is where I think we stand as of now:
Salary Cap $168.3 mil
Top 51 Cap Hit: $145.3 mil Dead $$: $13.5 mil
Total Offseason Cap Hit: $158.8 mil
Offseason Cap Space: ~$9.5 mil
Looks like this is not yet updated for Quinton Patten or Jonotthon Harrison FA signings.
Offseason only counts Top 51 salaries, so we are actually a lot tighter than that against the cap. We will need ~$8.0 mil to sign our draft class. And then for the regular season, we will need $$ for two extra players up to the 53 man roster, plus another ~$1.5 million for a 10-man practice squad.
Hopefully a trade of Sheldon &/or Pryor before the draft will free up some space.

Not sure how his status on IR impacts our ability to cut him in the offseason. We may need to wait until he is cleared medically, or negotiate an injury settlement.

Shit, I thought we had more money than that. Sure is an expensive pile of shit we have here. Especially at the top. Top 10 guys are paid about $83mil -- 50% of the total cap, closer to 60% if you net out the dead money. And what do we have for that $83 mil: 3 DLs who totaled 13 sacks last year. All good players, but we have never figured out how to get them all on the field to play effectively together. And unless Mo returns to his 2015 and prior form, he is not worth anywhere near the $18MM he is getting paid. A solid #2 WR coming off shoulder surgery 2 guards -- both solid starters, but at a non-premium position A nickel corner who is a penalty flag machine A free safety coming off knee surgery who is not all that great when healthy A jag QB with an 18-42 lifetime record A 33 year old inside linebacker who has been a warrior, but is on the downside of his career

So what's all this talk about having a bunch of money to spend next year? Or is that a whole different situation.

In this scenario, the Super Bowl will be played by the dollar, "Optimism" will be played by the rope and "Reality" will be played by the the anvil.

This team could never afford a guy like Rodgers, Newton, Ryan, etc. Yes, it would be a good problem to have but man, with no money tied up in a franchise QB you'd think the rest of the Jets roster would be much better.

If we had a franchise QB, we probably wouldn't have a combined $11M in cap commitments for McCown and Fitz as we wouldn't have signed them. Added to the current cap space, with a couple of simple restructures or cuts, there would be ample space to accommodate a big QB deal. Now we just need to find a QB worth paying.

What an lethargic looking top 10. What exactly is exciting about our roster right now? A couple young players from recent drafts, and....? Do we even have an explosive playmaker on Offensive that we would consider "The Face"..?
