Serious question.
I'm involved in a situation where a mentally challenged 18 year old with a well documented history of sexual abuse against others and animals was in a program for treatment. The treatment -- he was told to write down in a journal ALL of his sexual fantasies. He was encouraged to "process" his non-deviant fantasies -- like sex with a girl his own age. "Process" means to masturbate. He was encouraged NOT to process his deviant fantasies -- like sex with little kids and dogs. All the while he was living in a foster home with little kids and animals while attending a regular high school in classes with mentally challenged 17 and 18 year old boys and girls. He would often "lapse" -- which meant he masturbated to deviant fantasies.
The therapist seemed to believe that the entire scenario seemed legit because he used words like "process" and "lapse" instead of something like jerked-off.
The point of the "therapy" was to encourage the good sexual fantasies and discourage the "deviant" ones by having him "process" only the good, non-deviant fantasies. But, he was chastised if he failed to journal all of his deviant fantasies for not being honest.
I am dumbfounded. Is this a legit therapy? Why in the world would you encourage the kid with a history of abusing others to think about and write down his deviant sexual fantasies. Wouldn't it be better to give him a mechanism to think about something else instead of deviant sexual acts?
