From what I have read, it seems that Morton just rubbed too many guys up the wrong way - Bowles, Assistant Coaches, players. He did a pretty good job, but the chemistry was just too toxic.
As to replacements, get me a guy that knows QBs - Haley, DeFilippo, Callahan, McCoy, Bates. I've heard Harold Goodwin mentioned - good coach, but his background is the OL and Arians was the real QB guru and the guy that masterminded the scheme and called the plays.

Two words. - Jim Bob Cooter. All in for cooter. Isn't that three words? Anyway....would be a great hire, but I suspect the new HC in Detroit keeps him. May have a better chance at the QB coach Brian Callahan, who Bowles apparently is interested in.

Unless its Todd Haley there was no point to firing Morton he took a offense with nothing and was in the playoff hunt most of the season.

The talk here in Detroit is that Patricia will be the next head coach of the Lions and that he'll get rid of Jim Bob and bring in Haley.

From Rich cimini
"This won't be an easy hire because the Jets don't have an established quarterback, and the rest of the offensive talent is marginal, to put it kindly. Hot-shot candidates won't be flocking to this team. It could be a repeat of last offseason, when no one wanted the job. Bowles settled for Morton, a relative no-name who had no background with quarterbacks."
This is why I think haley is a pipe dream. Why would he want to come here ?

I'm beginning to think Bates being elevated is the most likely result - possibly with Rick Dennison added as running game coordinator to assist in play design and blocking schemes.
The filled those roles for Denver previously, with some success. Bates called the plays, Dennison designed the running game stuff.
Cutler had his best seasons with Bates calling the plays.

Yeah - judging from the articles coming out, a lot of the Jets FO feel Bates was responsible for the upside of the offense last year. I don't know much about Dennison, but Denver always seems to have a functioning running attack no matter who the back is. It may be a downer, but I think there is no splash hire coming - we're not that attractive an option. This move may be more about Bowles getting the extension and wanting to enforce his vision across the offense more than he was able so far. We'll see......

I hear ya - seems to be mostly about Sleepytime tea and Muzak. Still, he ran some dynamic D's in ARZ - and our own D was looking more like that then they did the previous two years. It is what it is - if they get a real QB and some decent FA help, I will be optimistic.

If he is truly a leader of men, can continue to build a killer defense, gets Haley or Defilipo as OC, Arians as offensive consultant and we trade up for Darnold or Risen it take Mayfield on the 6, I will be a happy fan. _
