You haven't lived until you have. Top to bottom, front to back. Taking a break from dread of a task. Probably wasted 100's of $ for waiting so long to do it this season. Blackface.

I have to scrap my oil heat. I'm getting too old for all the yearly maintenance. Most people that have oil don't even know it needs to be done and probably haven't had it done since they moved into their homes. Big $$$ going right up the chimney.

If your boiler is sooting up...then something isn't set right.
And yes. I've had to clean hundreds of sooted up boilers. Not fun without a sootvac. Might want to check the air bands.

Oil heat is actually awesome if the system is maintained and calibrated right. I miss working on oil burners...everything up here is gas.

It's not sooting up terribly, but some. I try to do the whole shebang (filter, nozzle, brush down) done at least once every year because the efficiency depends so upon it so greatly. This is an old Peerless JOT steam boiler, I'd imagine you're probably intimately familiar with them. I tune it buy eye, I pretty much try to get the flame HOT, glowing white and full. I don't have a nozzle on hand so I'm going to have to just clean up the old one in acetone or lacquer thinner for now. This boiler pisses me of actually because of the way the brushes get jammed in some spots between the plates where you don't get a clean shot all the way through, and then if you're not careful when trying to free it up you can go down too far and clip the liner. But all in all it's a simple unit with not so great efficiency to begin with.
I came across a shit load of HVAC parts and tools on the curb one day that looked like they had belonged to an old timer who maybe passed away and the kids put it out. In it was an old HeathKit exhaust analyzer that I'd like to see if I can use to tune the boiler if I can figure out how to use it..

Except I call a guy and don't do any of that.

And then what the guy does is takes the covers off the unit, clanks a wrench against a pipe every now and then, takes a beer out his toolbox and drinks it, flips on the vacuum for a bit clinkety clankety make it sound good, finds a corner of your basement he likes and proceeds to whack himself off in it, puts it back together and then comes upstairs and says "Okey Dokey sir, that'll be $150, thank you very much"
