About the closest an average person will ever get to a military jet in flight. Let me tell you, the sound of raw jet engine power at very close distance is FUCKING AWESOME.

Honestly it is fucking awesome.
But I’m not sure why it’s a thing at football games.
Maybe makes sense for Super Bowl?

Hate to tell them that military pilots have to fly so many sorties per month so it isn't as though the planes would sit idle if it weren't for flyovers. Pilots need practice. There was nothing worse than being on a mission and getting home to find out that the pilot/crew needed 4 more take offs and landings for the month so we had to sit there doing "touch and go's" which is where the plane "lands" but as soon as the wheels tap the runway they take off again. Worst part of a flight and you have to do it repeatedly for practice. Just to make it worse the crew seats in our jets face the rear of the plane which made the air sickness just a little bit worse.

Interesting stuff. Thanks. It’s always fascinated me how we mix sports with other things.

Pilots need to keep current for sure. Flying over a stadium is hardly training. Takeoff and landing are the most challenging and dangerous phases of flight, so touch n goes are a much more valuable training exercise than a fly-over. I don’t see what’s terrible about fly overs though. Pretty cool shit IMO. Maybe even inspire a kid or two in the crowd to pursue a career in aviation or the military or both.

Also as someone else mentioned it is a precision maneuver which is a good training exercise. It also gives a public forum to celebrate the American soldiers/seamen and airman that keep America safe which is valuable in my opinion. Especially considering that they usually bring the crew to the stadium after halftime to be applauded.

A few years back I was a Wrigley Field for a Cubs game and they were practicing for the Air Show which takes place on the Chicago Lakefront. While watching the game you could hear the jets in the background. All of a sudden an A-10 Warthog came screaming by low and loud. Very impressive and puts the fear of God into you. I was sitting with a former Airforce vet who looked at me and said: "That's the sound of freedom baby." Oh, and by the way, Fuck Troy Aikman and that no talent Joe Buck who piggybacked off his father. However, he does have a hot 2nd wife. link
