the AVT move is definitely gonna garner some scrutiny, but the move was savvy as fuck
1. Joe had 3 OL in his top-10: Sewell, Slater, AVT 2. Joe identified an area of the draft that OL might start getting plucked: 14-23. Vikings (no OL), Pats (lost Thuney), Raiders (no OL) were a major risk to take anyone Joe wanted. Joe didn't play no fuckboy games, he got his guy. alas, it handed the Pats Jones... hopefully he sucks 3. Joe was never NOT gonna come out of day 1 with OL. he is the anti-maccagnan and knows where the games are won. i believe there is a very strong chance his next pick is another OL (Jenkins or Humphrey), with less of a chance of CB or edge. 4. AVT himself is the right guy, cuz he proved he can play OT or G. if Becton is ever hurt, AVT might slide over. but him and Becton on the left creates a problem for defenses when both healthy. 5. the trade was great because he gave up no future capital, maintained the 2nd pick which can still be traded to make up the lost capital, and identified a round with less value (3) to leverage to move into the top 10 of his draft board. tremendous trade.

#4 needs to be noted more by the talking heads as well - the ability to kick out to LT if Becton gets hurt is huge. That's one reason I also like Tevin Jenkins, I think he ultimately may be a RG, but could play RT as well. Having that flexibility is huge.
Great move up to snag a guy they had in their top 10, rather than risk losing him.
As for Mac Jones, I think he was going to the Pats no matter what. Im not particularly impressed by him, he had an all star cast at Bama and while Im sure the Pats will get the most out of him, I dont think his ceiling is particularly high?

I agree. I had JD trading up to get AVT. I was hoping it would be more in the 16 / 17 range but with the pats @ 14 & the fish @ 18, JD had to pull the trigger when he thought the time was right.
Did giving up 23 & the two thirds hurt? Absolutely! But it was definitely the right call. JD knew that he couldn’t afford a “work in progress” on Wilson’s blind side. I picture AVT as a plug & play 10 year starter. It’s a move that greatly enhanced Wilson’s chance to be successful.
To me, this was a great first round. Now onto round 2.

Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.
