just had surgery so im stuck at home choosing how to spend my hours. this morning was overanalyzing the video below and needing to puke out some thoughts
basing 99% of thoughts of the offense on this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLrUBMOBVoo
basing 99% of thoughts of the defense without a video
basing 99% of my judgments of idiot fans on my experience at the green and white scrimmage
1.stupid fans at green and white scrimmage: i was in attendance and happened to be seated a few feet from the whole wilson/first round pick fam: wilson's parents, his girlfriend, and the girlfriends of AVT and elijah moore. if any of you were also the vicinity, hopefully you'll agree that what was on display was a sick embarrassment. firstly, shame on me for not doing more to shame the idiot who was doing everything in his tiny dick moment to make wilson's mom and the three girlfriends uncomfortable. shouting their names, yelling at them to check their DMs or whatever, and frankly saying stupid sexual shit to girls who are half his age. come on tiny dick dude, you gotta be better than that. if you had a daughter and heard someone say to them what you said to these girls you'd probably pay someone to give them a piece of your mind. three kids seated next to me heard what you said and started following suit. great example you and your chuckling friends are setting.
2. OL: AVT better be good, because dan feeney sucks ass. he got blown up a couple of times and was saved by wilson's quick release. becton and moses make great bookends. everyone else was fine. george fant experiment is over, hopefully moses can be a medium-long term solution until becton gets a second contract.
3. defense: excited to see what the DL rotation can do with QW and vinny curry back. damn. giants OL sucks but pressure is pressure and they made the giants OL look as bad as they are.
3. Wilson: really happy with wilsons performance. in the preseason you can't look for numbers but rather evidence of skill and the work being put in.
a. most run plays had wilson roll out after the handoff. reminds defenses he can run and will run. nice to put on tape. lessens pressure in the box. lets the kid master his timing and groove, keeping things consistent for him.
b. first throw (0:40): checkdown to davis in the flat. wilson stares him down, not ideal but not so bad given he was wide open for days. wilson had three choices: throw it ahead of davis, which would take him off his route and closer to the sideline; throw it to the outside shoulder, which would make davis susceptible to a big hit, or throw it slightly behind davis while keeping him in stride, allowing davis to make his own play with the ball in his hands. wilson wisely chooses the third option, the safest option, knowing that at least 5 yards were to be had. smart. accurate. just don't stare down next time, maybe davis could have bought 2 extra yards with the DBs hesitating.
c. second throw (1:20): another staredown (not good) but knows he only has 2 options on this throw due to the incoming hit: davis on the out or carter as the checkdown. clearly he preferred the veteran option, as he should. tried to time the throw, slight misfire. the DB actually did a decent job of disrupting davis' timing. as far as incompletions go, this was a safe one to make. nothing wrong here.
d. third throw (1:30): definitely the best throw of the day and showcases the newfound competence of the OL, even with the horrendous dan feeney in for AVT. this throw is the reason some QBs succeed and others fail. not clear if wilson is staring down davis because there are two receivers in his sightline, but he made the right choice on the throw. with a clean pocket he has two options, both guys running similar routes. wilson has to figure out 2 things: which receiver has better separation, and which receiver has a better chance of getting the first down? thankfully davis was the answer to both. you can see exactly when wilson makes his choice on this throw: the moment before davis makes his break to the outside, wilson knows he's going there because he has about a yard of separation already. wilson releases the ball before davis finishes the cut, before he turns his head. wilson puts the ball exactly where it needed to be: plenty of room for davis to get his feet inbounds, plenty of room for him to wiggle free for extra yards if he manages, but also tight enough where davis can muscle it in if he had to. perhaps it could have gone a few more inches towards the sideline, because a much better DB may have done more to disrupt the ball, but with a big-body guy like davis this ball will rarely get contested. once again wilson shows respect for davis' skillset and simply puts davis in the position to make a play. this DB was good enough to wrap up and tackle. a DB making an arm tackle would have been left in the dust because wilson was wise to not put davis too close to the sideline. this throw is a perfect blend of throwing the receiver open while also getting a safe and secure first down.
e. fourth throw (2:16): worst throw of the game, the only real dangerous throw, which is concerning because its the redzone. the arm angle was nice to see, but i think he thought the rush was closer to him than it really was. it was really nice to see him stay in the pocket though, since the facade of a running lane was there between becton and feeney. if he had ran he probably would have got hit early so i respect the discipline to stay in the pocket. but what i did not like was the over-reliance on davis here. checkdown would have been better. perhaps he was trying to draw a DPI but the throw was too shallow for that. but this throw shows why dan feeney could ruin the season if AVT is ever hurt. wilson had to show off the arm angle because feeney let the defenders hand get in wilsons face.
f. fifth throw (2:40): good to see wilson stay upright and make the throw. receiver falls, not wilsons fault. he winds up for the throw just as he falls, but he knows he doesn't have time to pump fake and look for the checkdown. had to make the throw. he knew it would be incomplete. i think he overthrew it on purpose just to avoid any big trouble. others may have throw it into the ground perhaps. nothing bad here at all. good restraint and awareness of the situation.
g. sixth throw (3:04): not much to see here other than a confident 15 yard throw on a 3rd and 9. the fact that it was even attempted and succeeded is positive enough. no analysis needed. i guess what can be said more is that he chose the right target of the 3 in the vicinity. could have gone deeper to 82, leading him to the middle of the field. two other unsafe options:81 had less separation and the incoming sideline, 82 could have been expecting either a longer throw or a body throw and could easily miscalculate. instead he took the safest of the three throws and extended the drive with a big chunk. made it look easy.
h. seventh throw (3:33): not much to see here, but we do see him stare down the receiver again. not a big deal because he was wide open the whole way, but hopefully we see more eye movement in the future. easy pitch and catch. the big positive here was, again, the timing. smith sits on the route expecting the ball as he sits. wilson hits him exactly when he expects to be hit. didn't have to wait for the ball, allowing the DB to make up ground for a possible breakup. perfect timing allowed smith to keep his feet moving after the catch.
i. eighth throw (4:00): easy pitch and catch. took advantage of bad defense.
j. ninth throw (4:15): possibly the second and last questionable throw of the game. nothing bad, just nothing too good either. we finally do see his eyes move more here, which is a positive. however i think he missed two opportunities here: lead the ball a little more for crowder and allow him to run (this will get better over time as he acclimates to the speed) or throw 88 open towards the sideline because he really only had a safety to beat. would have been the first big shot of the day and possibly could be considered a safer throw than the crowder throw, which had a little traffic. but hey the job got done, except for the penalty (so few of those btw, v nice)
k. tenth throw (4:30): took a hit and threw to his second best option. although we all like to see a gutsy throw on 3rd down, the checkdown may have been better here. 25 seemed to have more room around him to, at the very least, have the same gain as 81. perhaps make the first down, perhaps not. but def cant be upset about this especially after making the throw while getting hit.
overall wilson did everything asked of him, had only one bad throw, and otherwise was safe, sound, efficient, and showed timing and anticipation with his receivers. needs to work on moving his eyes a little more. perhaps the coaches asked him to be more safe than sorry here, but he definitely let 1 or 2 plays be a little too conservative. but that will change in time. it is clear he knows how to put the ball in his playmakers hands and let them do their thing. the next step would be him making the play for them. he deliberately avoided trouble on a couple of occasions and showed discipline by not being duped by the facade of running lanes, choosing instead to stay in the pocket and hit a well-timed throw. receivers never had to strain to catch the ball. had pressure/hands in his face on at least 3 of these throws and it only seemed to disrupt him once. out of the 3 incompletions only one was a bad throw, the others were simply good defense and the receiver falling. obviously we can't say he will be a good player or bad player yet, but absolutely nothing from this game even shows a shadow of concern except the possibility that he may be staring down favored targets. then again, that can make or break a qb.
TLDR: at least one jets fan should be ashamed of themselves but all jets fans should be very optimistic about the qb.
