my son shakin jr. II landed an apprenticeship in the furniture builders union, hand building steinway pianos. so happy for the kid, as you may recall he's the one that recently had the seizures and hospitalization out of nowhere. while i'm not happy that he'll be tied to nyc now, working in astoria, i am so happy for him and goddam proud of him. tough program to get into and he was a top candidate.
i needed some good fucking news and this works. well, this and the upcoming vegas bacchanalia fest

Handbuilding pianos sounds really cool. In retrospect I wish I'd done something manual instead of behind a desk.

I’m doing a job in Astoria, right in that area. I was looking at the area around the site and saw Steinway pianos there. I was like ‘no shit, you wouldn’t think they make pianos there’. Totally nondescript building.

Congrats.
I went down a youtube rabbit hole a while back and watched a ton of piano making vids. A lot of them were Steinways. Incredibly interesting process.

A documentary about how they build these Steinway pianos in that old NY factory. It was very interesting you should check it out. The process looked to be the same as it was 100 years ago

They are fantastic pianos and I would be proud to work there. Its an art and a trade.

Totally nondescript building. Yes, that’s also how Steinway Street got its name. My dad had his own business on 11th Street for > 35 years about a mile or so away, he wound it up the week of the Marino-O’Brien shootout game the Jets won.

Congrats shakin. Is it too soon to ask that he write "LETSGOBRANDON" on every piano he works on?
