So, I'm pretty stressed out right now. We were told that my husband is being discharged tomorrow. They were going to do it today, with absolutely no warning. F'kn non-communicative idiots! Maybe I wouldn't mind so much, but he's not better yet. He will need 8 to 12 more weeks to heal and they won't keep him in the hospital that long. They could do surgery to try to fix the obstruction, but he's too sick for that and it's too risky right now. Maybe in 8-12 weeks, he would be healed enough for surgery. Of course, the hope is that he heals completely on his own and doesn't need any more surgery. He's still not allowed to drink or eat anything and will be on an IV for nutrition, and maybe other stuff I don't know, when he comes home. So I'm going over there shortly to learn how to administer an IV. (Jworks--where the hell are you when we need you? ) Maybe your health insurance would cover a home health nurse to come in? Yes, I was told the insurance will cover a nurse to come in at times, to draw blood, etc.. But I don't know how often or what exactly they'll do. That's the next meeting I need to have, after the IV pharmacy/equipment people. EDIT: Oh, and I'm sure others have gone through this, and through much worse. It's just the first time for me, so I'm feeling a bit unsettled until I learn more. Off to the hospital, I go now, again!

I don't know what it is about these hospitals and their lack of communication and decision making! Something sort of similar happened to my family, when my father was ill and in the hospital but then not ill enough to be kept in the hospital but too sick to be home without care they recommended rehab, but then they said he was going home, so we made all those arrangements. Then, at the last minute (literally 4:45 on a Friday before a holiday weekend) they told us he was being discharged to a rehab center and to select one by 5pm!!!!! We did not make a good choice unfortunately under that duress. So if that is an option for you consider it but review rehab centers very carefully. Otherwise most any insurance should cover a home health nurse, and an aide. AT the very least have one come in a few times to show you how to administer the IV, etc. Good luck!

Hospital in FLORIDA kicked me out and told me to go back home to NY when 8 had ascites with hydrothorax and a Collapsed lung due to liver damage. Their reasoning nothing more they could do for me unless of course i had 450,000 dollars cash, i think my insurance quit paying. Fuck hospitals Fuck Insurance. Mount Sanai excluded.

Mount Sanai is a fucking bunch of saints though. They had a chest tube in chest cavity tap, another professional abdominal tap before I even handed out any insurance info Or a credit card, not to mention the tests done , I literally thought I was back in a different country, i was out of NY for 6 years

Cancer gets the spotlight all the time, but those two are relentless in how much they impact everything else. Glad you were lucky enough to survive...

Sucks being barely able to breathe. You can go without food for two weeks. Water, two days. Air? About two minutes.

Cant breath with hydrothorax either and your lungs collapse a pain you have to experience, but it just keeps happening over and over, because the water around them cant be drained quick enough so it crushes them and collapses them, no water in the lung mind you around it, even with the garden hose sticking out your back draining fluid, then the needle with a vacuum in your gut, another pain you have to experience the needle is about 2 feet long, oh and no pain meds because well your liver cant handle it, to take out 10 12 litres of fluid every other day, then you have the blood cough where a good litre of blood will come up due to the varacies bleeding in your throat. Meanwhile your heart is healthy as shit and continues to feed the dying the liver. When the old drunks used to warn me to put a bullet in my head instead of going through liver failure i know why now. It is without a doubt the worst way to go, any doctor will tell you that

Like Ragu said, your liver processes so much, including meds and, more importantly, ammonia. Hepatic encephalopathy; not pretty. Best way to fight it? Colace to make you shit it out. Renal failure wrecks you too, similar issue with the elimination of meds, along with the lovely effects on your cardiovascular system (CHF, you'll drown in your own fluids while looking like a overfilled bag of water).

One more vote for a rehab facility here.

I just went through this with my dad. He lost his battle Jan 7th. It was ultimately cancer that killed him that spread from his lungs to his spine, but the lingering Emphysema is what made his last few weeks miserable, he just about choked to death. Thank good the cancer in his spine took him before suffocated because that is where he was headed.
